U.S. president signed an executive order in the Oval Office on Wednesday

U.S. President Donald Trump is dealing another tariff blow to Canada, signing an executive order on Wednesday that will hit all non-U.S.-made autos with hefty import levies.

Trump said the United States will be applying a 25 per cent tariff on those imports, but it’s not clear when they would apply.

The president said the auto tariffs will kick in on April 2 but suggested they could start at a base rate of 2.5 per cent.

“What we’re going to be doing is a 25 per cent tariff on all cars that are not made in the United States. If they’re made in the United States, there is absolutely no tariff. We’ll start off with a 2.5 per cent base, which is what we were at, and we’ll go to 25 per cent,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Autos are the second-largest Canadian export after oil — and by far the most lucrative manufactured product that Canada sells to the world, linked to hundreds of thousands of Canadian jobs.

2.5% is the announced tariff. A bit of annoying amount. With steel and aluminum tariffs, certainly still gives Canada a cost advantage. But complete BS uncertainty for everyone on what “we will go to 25%” means and when or why.

Coverage is confusing AF. Just saw signing declaration, and it appears as though its 25% right away. He’s also subsidizing US made cars with “tax deductible interest” on car loans. He said “these tariffs are permanent 100%”. He seemed to speak for big 3 announcing that they will move “their parts factories to the US”, and they have the spare capacity to do so… but he also said 20 provable lies, so this part is unclear.

Everything depends on automakers actual response, and we can hope that Ontario/Canada pressure for them to make the right choice is done.

It means everyone was talking about signal chats and not paying him any attention

So does this apply to Teslas too? We already know they source parts from Canada and complained that the tariffs weren’t fair.

Another report said it would also apply to parts: "The new tariffs would apply to both finished autos and parts used in the vehicles, according to a White House official who insisted on anonymity to discuss the taxes on a call with reporters. "

I do not see a reversal coming with this one as he is going to “slowly” work his way up to 25% so people do not suffer from sticker shock right away. This plan however only works if people buy vehicles regularly, I am just a pleb so I do not buy vehicles often enough to care about the original 2.5%.

If dumbass stuck to a plan this time it would be the first. He’ll get pissy on Truth Social and blow it up to 25% between here and April 2. Then because he’s a chicken shit he’ll send a lower-level cronie to negotiate with a minister in Washington. Then after posturing we’ll be pausing for another month.

He has no new ideas. This is all he will ever try.

A week ago I would have agreed with you, but he is going to want the news cycle taken off of the whole signal and reporter stuff. When the news continues covering how dangerous his people are to US security he will bump it up again, and so on and so forth.

Trump does not want people to realize he is a failure who put people in place that are failures, he will want every news story be about how good he is. He has decided that the Russian sanctions should be over so he will be funding the war in Ukraine soon so that is a news story Fox will spin into something positive, while us in Canada but more so Saskatchewan will be lost scratching our heads why Saskatchewan’s DUI hire did not plan for this in the provincial budget.

If Trump’s security officials are still in the news after it comes clear that the tariffs are hurting his voters as well as his donors he will do something else really stupid and I foresee maybe a global war. All because US officials used social media to plan a military operation while including a reporter.

I hear your worry but I really don’t think he has the stones. For all the bluster he has only enabled other countries to do the dirty work. It’s a lot less risky for him to pick on Ukraine or Greenland by threatening to take away money than it is to put US boots on the ground somewhere.

He’s loud and offensive but also very fragile and cowardly. He spins it but he’s backed down every single time.

It doesn’t matter if he reverses tariffs. The bridge has been burned… and the temporary bridge we built out of grace has also been burned.

We’re putting all our bridge materials from here on out towards Europe.

The trump regime was designed to TANK the US economy so that stocks, businesses, and industries can be bought by billionaires at rock bottom prices.

All is going according to plan.
