Shareholders don’t need to make profits anymore because they literally own everything and are actively participating in a coup to keep it that way.
Cars are vastly more reliable. Clearly you weren’t around for carbs.
Sure, but I can fix a carburetor with a wrench and a screwdriver. Can’t do that with modern cars.
starting to not even be able ro change their brakes
Are you aware that next to your name are two red warning triangles telling everyone you’re of dubious character?
Yep. There is a huge echo chamber here who don’t like when things like, cars being objectively more reliable, are pointed out.
I don’t see the triangles. Is it because I have trials too? Now I’m paranoid.
This is a classic illogical proposition. You are denying the antecedent. Just because you can’t see the triangles doesn’t mean that they are there. It is a necessary but not sufficient condition to state that you may have triangles if you do not see the triangles. If you have triangles, you will not see them. But just because you don’t see them won’t mean that you have them. Because nobody sees them. Logic won’t save you!
And yet the somehow charge more for it.
Tuned for optimal exploitation.
I sometimes ask people, “Do you think that in 500 years, capitalism will still govern the world? Is capitalism the last system we will ever see, and is it the single best system humanity as a species could possibly come up with?”
And they are just dumbfounded and don’t know what to say, because they can’t even imagine the concept of an alternative.
Like is often said, for many it’s easier to imagine the end of the world than it is to imagine the end of capitalism.
Untamed capitalism will eventually progress to some sort of feudalism
Well, capitalism has been around for thousands of years so I don’t see why it would simply just disappear in the next 500.
Comparing business in ancient times with business today is like comparing warfare of today with sword and shield fighting.
War never changes, and neither does business. It’s just the trends that change.
Just ask Ea-Nasir.
One reason George Washington wasn’t the worst general was that he was actually a fine horseman and could get around the battlefield quickly.
Try an actual book written by one of the best minds of our time.
“Wasn’t the worst general” is a weird way to say “he could have been king of America if he’d wanted”.
TRADE. TRADE has been around for thousands of years, and trade doesn’t dictate who we are or what we want to be, the exchange of goods is not the be all end all of our societies. There are ample proof of cultures that did not have money and still lived a good life.
Capitalism is a very different beast which took shape during the industrial revolution.
And the fact that you are incapable of seeing an alternative means you are on the side of the oligarch cabal running your life.
Oh, I’ve seen plenty of alternatives, but I’ve never seen any of them work out in the long run. They always sound good on paper but end up disastrous when implemented in the real world.
Also, banking, the main feature of capitalism, which turns capital into a tradable good, is much older than you think. Making loans and charging interest are already mentioned in the Bible, an in fact, have been around for at least 2000 years before that (Source).
Do you think capitalism has worked out in the long run?
Just because we do something destructive and that destruction is the norm, doesn’t mean something is “working”. What is the purpose of the system? Is it to serve the people and ensure an equitable distribution of resources?
Actually, everything is working as intended

This single diagram really tells you all you ever need to know. And yet a lot of people in the bottom 50% think that the gays or refugees are to blame for their problems.
all you ever need to know
There is a line missing, for the 0.001%.
And they also might magically become the 1%
I feel like the tiny little uptick in the red line at the end is just a lie to try to give us a smidge of hope.
Now lets see it adjusted for the real value of the dollar over time! :D
why? the lines aren’t going to change.
They will, the gap will get much larger, this method of displaying the data doesn’t show quite how bad it actually is
The only point here, as always, is that everybody and anybody who thinks that this chart and only this chart is what matters, is objectively a fucking idiot who has disqualified their own opinion, along with those implying it is a real, serious opinion, which it is not.
Oh dear god I had not seen that graph updated in some years.
WTF happened in 1971?
Apparently it’s so common a question it’s made into a domain https://wtfhappenedin1971.com/
a domain with spurious conclusions
there’s a how history words vid on the subject https://youtu.be/HchNA3a9L5E I dunno if it tackles your question tho, as if haven’t watched
Republicans. Go figure.
after a bit of a search, Nixon happened
LBJ wanted to have social spending and have a massive knockout punch in Vietnam. Instead of a knockout punch, the War turned into a massive quagmire. It was costing the US a fortune, but LBJ didn’t want to raise taxes, so he printed money. Nixon got elected and doubled down on the War and using inflation to pay for it. Then the OPEC oil embargo hit and inflation went through the roof.
Jimmy Carter’s plan [controlled by Fed chair Paul Volker] solved inflation, but by the time it kicked in Carter had been replaced by Reagan. Reagan deregulated a lot of industries and let them run wild.
In 1968, ‘middle class’ was defined as one Union job supporting a family of four. At that time $1 million was a vast fortune. By the time Bush Sr. was out, ‘middle class’ meant two incomes to run the home, and $1 million was what a rich guy paid for a party.
Whenever you want to understand the state of the USA, consider George Bush, president, father of George Bush, president.
We’re a fucking Middle Eastern dynastic fiefdom, with fucking nukes.
The funny thing is that Bush Dr. castigated Reagan’s tax cuts as ‘voo-doo economics’ when they were running against each other in the primaries. Once Reagan won the nomination, Bush signed on whole heartedly
The intricacies of their complex don/sub dynamic are expertly explored in the hard-hitting documentary Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.
When it’s not working, it’s working.
I feel like the graph looks like that no matter what years you set as the first and last in the range, the scale just gets larger as time goes on, as if printing money to solve problems just does that
I still can’t believe that the united states had multiple lunar landing missions and several people set foot on the moon… and now the US military and civilian space agencies are reliant on a company run by a Nazi manchild and that cannot send spaceships and satellites beyond low earth orbit…
In all seriousness going to LEO gets the job done the vast majority of the time, medium and high earth orbit have very few use cases with the exception of geostationary which SpaceX has gone to.
Going to the moon is very energy intensive and you don’t get a ton of benefit for it so there’s no real point to going there. Apollo was a jobs program and a dick waving contest with Soviet Russia to prove who could put the biggest nuke anywhere on Earth. Going to the moon has very little scientific/practical value outside of political stunts which Apollo and Artemis programs definitely are
It was supposed to be our shipyard to build bigger ships than we could lift to orbit, until the dick waving started. NASA had much much bigger plans than just walking around on the moon.
To be fair to Musk (LOL!) NASA was chock full of former Nazi scientists back then. You don’t believe me? walk into NASA sometime and yell “Heil Hitler!” WOOP! They all jump straight up! R.I.P Jessica Walter.
Capitalism still works!
do you have the latest software update though?
Everything for the shareholders!
Me when any software/hardware/game breaks:
I like the author xe cution
“We have finally eliminated planned obsolescence. We have replaced it with instant obsolescence.”
retro obsolescence with over the air “updates”
Counterpoint: Linux on the desktop works now
Linux is famously both American and Corporate /s
But yeah sytsem76 and valve are both american and valve is corporate. And around Lemmy you would think they are the only ones responsible for the Linux boom.
It’s a little bit of both of those nowadays with all the corporate maintainers and the fact that the Linux Foundation is headquartered in the US and Torvalds lives in the US too
But really it’s still a global effort
Hannah Montana Linux can run code on time itself and create whatever you want from nothing.
My car runs forever and my tires run even when flat. Nah bro
It’s because of all the wokeness.

Obviously. Once we ban trans girls from playing volleyball, all our problems will be solved.
It all turned to shit.

As all things are wont to do in the long run.
One day, you too will be food for worms, who will then shit you out (well, your soft tissues at least).
Oh may the worms lords take me soon!
Can’t fucking wait.
Well that’s good news. Now I can finally relax. I’m going to go lay down in my back yard, that is nothing but dry dirt, and stare up at the pollution clouds in the sky. Good time, good times.
Oooh look at Mr. Fancy over here with a dry dirt yard and pollution clouds in the sky! We used to dreeeeam about dry dirt yards and pollution clouds, instead we were happy in our pit of acid rain, and we didn’t complain, either!
Ha! I would give anything for acid rain, I am so parched! Someday I dream of moving to the lush, green fields of Chernobyl.
