Can I use a chatmail account as an alternate email address ?
On someone else’s server, no. If you’re the admin of the chatmail server it seems to be possible.
https://support.delta.chat/t/create-a-normal-email-with-chatmail-im-an-admin/4401A chatmail relay is a standard email server you’d find anywhere else with some specificities:
- any account is valid. To “create” an account just login with it and your password in your usual mail app and the account will be created. Of course if it already exists you must have the correct password, so you can’t “steal” an account
- messages are automatically and unconditionally deleted after a certain amount of time. Inactive accounts are deleted after a certain amount of time. Each relay publishes their setting, I think the default is something like 30 and 90 days, respectively
- incoming and outgoing messages must be pgp-encrypted. Any plaintext message will be dropped
- Only dkim is setup, other mechanisms aren’t so you might have trouble with some of the stricter checks of other servers
A chatmail relayis just a box to receive and relay messages for the deltachat apps, but since it uses completely standard protocols it interacts with the rest of the email ecosystem
The concluding paragraph is what I needed to know. I had been using my chatmail relay account just as an alternate email address where l didn’t want to submit my actual email address.
By default newer versions of the chatmail relay will drop unencrypted incoming mail so this usecase will be phased out. Relay operators should not have to deal with all the rules around storing private information (which could be in those unencrypted emails).
A friend of mine shared this with me :

In general we focus on the encrypted chat part and not on the clear text email. You can just use any mail client for clear text email, there is no benefit in using delta chat client for that. It’s actually worse since you won’t get notifications for non-chatmail which is not possible to fix on platforms like iOS which don’t have permanent background modes.
This doesn’t mean we are actively trying to remove clear text email support but some recent innovations required refactoring that we decided not to fully back port to clear text email, because it’s not our priority.
