I had to look this one up, it’s a reference to a mountain climber, George Mallory. From Wikipedia:

Alright, it’s my turn: I don’t get this one
Instead of climbing the mountain “because it’s there,” he’s descending into the inverted-mountain-shaped hole “because it’s not there.”
