How long before they introduce some sweet new fascism features?
“Our new GestureSupport(“Gestapo”) means you can now upvote by striking your arm up and to the right…”
Maybe a slider so we can adjust how much “masculine energy” shows up in our feeds?
That is probably already implemented in the algorithm, currently disabled, but the control knob will start turning up as needed
That was quick.
I’m honestly amazed they didn’t have ads out of the gate, Meta’s whole schtick is advertising and data.
They thought they could EEE the fediverse first.
Turns out people on decentralised social media aren’t totally fucking brain dead and could see it coming a mile away.
If they had any intention of EEE the fediverse, they wouldn’t have required users to opt into it, or made it unidirectional.
I think it’s pretty clear at this point that their only intention was to head off antitrust actions. But I think it’s safe to say we won’t see anymore development on that front in the near future.
What does EEE stand for?
Facebook famously didn’t have ads for a long time, even when people were pressuring Zuck to add them to keep the site from going running out of capital. Call it a loss leader, call it enshittification or market capture, whatever. Most companies that can afford to will start out being really great to their users, and once they have captured a section of the market, they start clawing more of that value back for themselves and their investors.
As someone not using Threads this is a big surprise. I mean I’m surprised it didn’t already have ads.
That was my first thought. I was surprised to find this out.
As another someone who doesn’t use Threads, it is a big surprise to find out there’s a website or something called Threads that looks like it’s related to email and apparently is popular.
As someone who uses thread how do you guys sew stuff?
I use duct tape.
we glue or melt things together. sometimes a stapler comes in handy as well
It’s Facebook brand Twitter, and is or was planned to be compatible with Mastodon (Fediverse Twitter)
“is popular”
Im pretty sure they auto setup an account on threads for anyone on Instagram to artificially make it popular.
That didn’t take long
Enshitification step 3
I remember the heady days when I thought this was the final step of enshittification. Such simple and innocent times.
Happened even faster than I thought lol.
The enshittification is carried over from other products. They’re meta, so anything they launch is partly along the path already, because they can artificially boost the launch numbers with cross-platform promotion, and because everyone already knows what assholes they are, they’re starting off with a lot of goodwill lost.
Basically, just slapping a new name and a new account creation process on some new features in their social network, is not enough to make it a new network.
I’m curious how Quest headsets will be enshitified.
Shhh. They forgot about us, let it stay that way a little longer!

I am jacks colon, I get cancer I kill jack!
lol. I mean. It was inevitable considering every other shit meta product.
I got out just in time, it seems.
How much longer will Bluesky survive without doing the same?
It’s either ads or a paid subscription. One of the two are inevitable, because running infrastructure to support millions of users ain’t free.
you were in?!
Mastodon isn’t.
Lemmy isn’t.
Pixelfed isn’t.
🤞🏻
@ThomasCrappersGhost @moseschrute tbh, any of the single instances can have them, but at least you can choose a diferent instance or in last resort run your own
Thank fuck.
Btw, I have this referral code for PAID: Shadow Workers. If you use my sign up code you’ll receive 10,000 SlutCoin and a free MegaSlurpJob, so sign up today with the code: LemonParty69
I am in.
I want to know how sloppy the MegaSlurpJob is first. Free is free, but I want to know how much value I’m getting first before committing.
When reading the title I accidentally placed an ‘i’ in ‘ads’…
There are no accidents
Tell that to my little brother.
Are there any instances that are actually federated with Threads?
I knew that there where some larger masto servers that tried to stay neutral but at least a lot of them switched when meta basically said they remove fact checking and let sexism and racism run ranpant without any consequences
It hasn’t come to Lemmy yet but when it does it appears only lemmy.world and sopuli.xyz is linked according to the fedi block list. Lemmy.world’s admin post about it seemed like they’re open to it. Both at https://slrpnk.net/comment/11960621 But no, no one’s seeing threads posts, yet.
Threads is still around?
Yes this is so confusing to me. There was a blast of attention about it when it was launched that lasted like a week max and then everyone completely forgot about it. I thought it was a short-run experiment that got shut down. What reason is there to use threads? Are there any actual humans who still use it? I’ve never visited it but something tells me that it’s just like reddit with at most 100 real users and the rest is just bots replying to bots.
and then everyone completely forgot about
You need to expand your sources of information. Threads is shit, I agree, but it is actually getting solid usage. You’re going off vibes on places like Lemmy.
Yup. If you only follow Lemmy, you’ll be completely confused at:
- why Tesla/X/other Musk stuff still exists
- how Trump won if nobody supported him
- how Meta is still in business if the only thing people use is their cheap VR headsets
There’s a lot of stuff we don’t see here.
Facebook is actually a bit of a mystery at this point. They stopped reporting DAU’s their numbers are so lackluster and they have burned a small nation’s budget on “The Metaverse” with nothing to show. Then they cut jobs, applaud, and stock goes up. A lot of folks are scratching their heads over but Wall Street loves it regardless.
Blue Sky is up next!
Is Threads even a good enough product for users to be willing to endure ads?
No, now that Bluesky is around I’ve stopped using Threads altogether.
Blue sky getting ads in 3, 2, 1….
And that’s when I leave Bluesky too. Meta goes down within a month and the clock is ticking for Bluesky. I’ll stay in the fediverse.
I mean… either they introduce ads, or they start charging for the service.
VC funding only lasts so long, and they have bills to pay (and probably shares to sell).
And that’s the problem. Sure, it’s better than threads or xitter now. The business model dictates that it will sink to the same level.
It allows no external browser and if you leave the app and return the page automatically refreshes so you lose your place.
