A journalist has publicly resigned from the Reuters news agency, accusing it of “enabling” the Israeli killing of Palestinian journalists in Gaza.
Valerie Zink, a photojournalist who worked for the company as a contractor for eight years, posted a picture on social media of her Reuters card severed in two, saying it had been involved in a “betrayal of journalists” with regard to its coverage of the war on Gaza.
She referred to the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif earlier this month and the double-tap air strikes that killed five journalists - including Middle East Eye reporters - at Nasser Hospital in Gaza on Monday.
“When Israel murdered Anas al-Sharif, together with the entire Al-Jazeera crew in Gaza City on August 10, Reuters chose to publish Israel’s entirely baseless claim that al-Sharif was a Hamas operative - one of countless lies that media outlets like Reuters have dutifully repeated and dignified,” wrote Zink.
"Reuters’ willingness to perpetuate Israel’s propaganda has not spared their own reporters from Israel’s genocide.
“Five more journalists, including Reuters cameraman Hossam al-Masri, were among 20 people killed this morning in another attack on Nasser hospital.”
MEE contributors Mohamed Salama and Ahmed Abu Aziz were also among those killed in the strike, which Israel has claimed was a “mistake” in its English language communications.
“Betrayal of journalists” is her concern. Not the tens of thousands of women and children murdered, not the 2.2 million people who’s homes have been reduced to rubble, not the intentional targeting of schools and hospitals, not the blockade driving a stage 5 famine. This time last year the count was already well over 150 journalists killed in Gaza. What’s the difference between 270 today and 150 last year?
She doesn’t care that hiding the genocide makes rueters and its employees complicit She only cares about her own skin.
imagine being a “journalist” and spend almost a decade helping Zionazis whitewash settler-colonialism by working for one, then suddenly having a “change of heart” because of the offchance that you might receive the brunt of that whitewashing… She and her ilk aren’t incompetent by any means, that would assume they don’t know what they’re doing, they very much understand what it is that they do.

You’re right, but like Commiejones said, this isn’t an action out of principle but out of self-interest. You’d think that journalists who spent almost a decade or so in the field would understand what 70+ years of ethnic cleansing and genocides are like, given the standard they’re held up to… The only reason anything so much as reporting about the Euroanglo-zionazis genociding, ethnic cleansing and land thievery of the Palestinians is possible is because it’s too hard for the imperial core West to keep under wraps.
But she hasn’t stepped out of anything. She isnt condeming the genocide in any way. She is complaining because she felt the murder of journalists was bad but only because she calls herself a journalist. Its completely self serving.
