The rotten egg analogy makes more sense. Each egg is completely sealed off from the others in the group. Since the shell is only permeable to gasses, one spoiled egg will not spoil the bunch.

If Lemmy is indicative of the left political spectrum, we can conclude that projection is common among humans in general.

Lol. I feel like not depicting characters that speak broken English would be racist. They represent like 5% of the population.

I think it has to do with the fact that most of them were born in area surrounded by hostile adversaries who would wipe that out of existence given the first opportunity.
Even if they spent the next fifty years being as nice as possible to the people around them, they would be conquered and assimilated if the US ever pulled their funding. They have two options: war or Exodus.

You could fund the facilities, but how many people would be willing to get a doctorate in biological chemistry if the only available jobs were relatively low paying civil servants?
Most of the researchers in the pharmaceutical industry were employed as minimum wage workers during their six years in college. We would have to completely overhaul the incentive structure if we expected colleges to replace the for profit industry.

I have mixed feelings on this. If the entire world had access to free healthcare, chances are research and development would grind to a halt unless they also funded research and development. Taxpayers would need to be willing to pay a company hundreds of millions of dollars if they discovered a useful product.
…it can work in theory, but I’m not sure if it would work in a democracy. The average voter would demand that money be spent on more immediately useful services. If it did work, however, we would save the billions of dollars pharmaceutical companies spend on lawyers and marketing.

…which is strange considering how many people risk their lives trying to get here. If America was as bad as it seems, you’d think there would be more illegal immigration in the opposite direction.

These pictures seem to imply that she was a victim of Epstein. I have my own opinion on this situation, but we should probably hold all of these women to the same standard.

I find it reassuring that the government is at least acting like they can’t identify this user without Reddit’s consent. I wonder why this charade is necessary; are they trying to set a legal precedent?

You’re making a good point. This is one of the reasons why flood and fire insurance is skyrocketing. Our historical models are no longer able to accurately predict future risk.

Aside from the hole in my tooth, I’m fine. I’m speaking as someone who is currently making the transition from a negligent dentist. Since losing a tooth is a cosmetic issue, failing to identify a problem that can be clearly seen on an x-ray for over a year doesn’t meet the standard of harm necessary for consequences. The selective failure of recent filling might have happened regardless.
…at this point, I’d have been less upset if this dude groped me. I’d let Satan work on me if he was a competent dentist.

I didn’t use this post. It was a week ago I clicked on the link on the top screen that said “donate to Lemmy.”. I don’t know exactly who the picture was, but I could recognize it as a left-wing revolutionary. It was that Spanish dude with a beard…Chavez I think. The picture was on Patreon and I think Librapay.
I’m not necessarily against him or left wing revolutionaries, but it felt like something the mods on News would use. After I thought about, I realized that whoever set up this instance probably controls the popular left wing communities. I would if I set up a website.
I don’t know the history of the person in the picture, but it’s commonly used by extremists. If I see that profile picture on Reddit, it means I’m about to read a comment from someone who thinks Bernie Sanders is a far-right capitalist.

I think most Americans are apathetic about issues that don’t effect our lifestyles. We don’t necessarily like the actions of our country as a whole, but we limit our outrage to the internet and the ballot box.
The addictiveness of a drug is actually a quantifiable metric. In the early 20th century, scientists exposed hundreds of drug naive individuals to different psychoactive compounds. Although there are individual differences, something like half of the people exposed to intravenous heroin and methamphetamine would actively seek out the next hit.

I was going to donate $5 per month, but I had second thoughts after seeing the profile picture on the donation site. I probably will still donate eventually, but I am not comfortable supporting an openly biased platform.
…I’m new. I’ll probably donate. I just need to make sure censoring people for different opinions isnt as common as it originally seemed. The fact that I was already banned from one of the most popular communities isn’t a good sign.
If those mods are the people that would receive the donations, then I don’t think they would use it for anything good…just a better funded echo chamber.

…the average worker in Africa would need to spend more than a year of wages to buy an Xbox or a PlayStation. Game consoles are in fact luxury goods, we just take them for granted.

It seems that there are multiple accounts set up to downvote anti-Chinese comments, so equilibrium is maintained.

Personally, I’d let my dentist grope me if he had a high enough success rate. I did some research a while ago, and a dentist whose work consistently fails will probably never lose his license. The patient won’t be able to successfully sue them and there probably won’t be an investigation. It’s a “buyer beware” scenario.
I have a feeling Bethesda’s executives ordered the development team to make it as un-controversial as possible. “I don’t give a damn if the game is terrible. You will lose your jobs if you compromise this merger.”
