I believed that one day I would find myself in a situation where I would have to save myself or a friend from being buried in quicksand.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•Same brand of cheese, very blue vs. barely blue
12·23 days agoI didn’t like blue cheese and my mother tried to fase me into it a few times with mild blue cheeses. Didn’t work. One day a guy gave me a cube of Stilton - Colston Basset, if I recall right - and my mind was blown. The taste was strong but so good that itvsomehow clicked. Blue cheese is something difficult. I find average blue cheese awful.
I used to have a pair of those. 44 m Much love for Fisher Price

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Are advent wreaths a thing outside of Germany?
4·1 month agoBelgian here. I have one at the door every year. I make it with my children around the first of December. The table top wreath is still a thing in my mothers’ place. She’s 70.
We have an advent calendar which is a box with small doors. Every day the kids open one door and get the treat or trinket behind the door. They are 16 and 18 but insist on tge tradition to be kept.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•So apparently full stops in texts are 'passive agressive' now. What other unwritten rules for texting have changed over the last couple of decades?
8·1 month agoYes! Preach! Same with new words. Every generation gets angry with the next generation using new words but you don’t get to decide how I use words. I will adhere to certain rules so we can keep understanding each other but all the members of the commission will have to be willing to rewrite the rules if the language has changed.
I’m running Home Assistant on mine at the moment. It’s amazing. Really. Apart from being an great smart home solution I’ve found it a good solution to create dashboards for life.
I have set up our family calendar, train schedules that change routes depending on the time. Waste collection notifications. It warns me to get a raincoat and umbrella in the morning. I get news headlines for my interests…
Before that I’ve tried a lot. It was my first step into home labbing 2 years ago. It brought me back to my youth. Breaking the family computer and trying to fix it before anyone noticing it.
Most of the stuff I ran used Docker.

Within a year I grew out of my pi setup and bought a second hand mini Lenovo that now runs Proxmox. Minor investment, huge upgrade. Moved away from dockers also.
The pi is a fun gateway drug.

Technology@lemmy.world•RAM is so expensive that stores are selling it at market pricesEnglish
271·2 months agoThat’s crap. They’ve loaded their stock on a certain price and they want to surf the high wave while they can.
Same for the Belgian implementation.
Why? I already have and use one for years. Most people in the privacy community have no issue with it.

2·3 months agoWe have a free online storage that was founded by the notaries in my country. I think nearly all important legal documents have a copy that is kept by the government.

So, i don’t need much from a launcher but gestures, custom icons and folders have been apart of my smartphone for so many year they’re a must.
