Technology@lemmy.zip•Instagram boss: 16 hours of daily use is not addictionEnglish
32·9 days agoHis argument is: 16 hours daily use is not addiction IF THAT IS THE ONLY FACTOR. He repeats it again and again. But that argument is stupid, because it ignores the other well-known and proven variables of addiction. Does this behavior have serious effects on your mental and physical health? Does it interrupt your work and play? Do you have an obsessive need to do it? The list goes on.
Who put this genius in front of a microphone?

politics @lemmy.world•Five Years Later, It’s Clear Jan 6 (and Trump) Broke AmericaEnglish
60·2 months agoThose of us possibly even older may point to the repeal of the Fairness Doctrine in '87. From Wikipedia, the fairness doctrine “required the holders of broadcast licenses both to present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that fairly reflected differing viewpoints.” In short, it’s repeal paved the way for Fox News and led all the way to CBS under Weiss.
But to your point, there are 3 things on my platform that I tell anyone who wants to hear it. 3 actionable items:
- Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine.
- Repeal the Patriot Act.
- Overturn Citizens United.
I didn’t say it would be easy.
I agree, which is why I don’t see why people are saying the answer is 16. You add in the parentheses, you multiply, then you divide. The answer is 1.
This left-to-right business linked below is complete nonsense when it comes to equations. That’s how westerners read books, but not how math is communicated. Am I that old? Like Mr. Incredible said, did they change math!?!
Luckovich is a badass.

7·2 months agoSo, she shares a name with The Walrus of Love himself, Barry White. Cool. There’s a joke in there somewhere…
In Star Trek, their run-of-the-mill, rarely discussed deflector is doing way more work than anything in the Star Wars universe. The one exception is the world-ender planet lasers which have been a big plot point in too many films and STILL have no plausible means to exist IN THEIR OwN UNIVERSE!

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•A new ‘solution’ to student homelessness: a parking lot where students can sleep safely in their carsEnglish
181·2 months agoGood. It’s terrible that this is a reality, but what is happening here is the decriminalization of being homeless and a student. Sure, you have to have a car, which isn’t great, but for those in this situation that need this service, I imagine it to be a comfort.
What this also does is make a very public safe space for people in dire conditions to congregate, commiserate, and hopefully organize. Please make a tent city; nothing will help illustrate the problem more. Create a safe place for unhoused people and see just how many show up.
A safe space for anyone to help meet their basic needs should always be a good thing.
Rage bait, maybe. But I chuckled, and that is good enough for me.
I like this.
I’m a staunch atheist who likes a holiday.
Jesus was most likely born in the spring or fall a few years earlier than we recognize, if he was even a single person or existed at all. The Church, as it did every time, took existing holidays and co-opted them.
The end of the Roman calendar year is an amalgam of pagan holidays that celebrate the shortest day/longest night. A lot of the traditions we associate with Xmas are celebrating the beginning of the lengthening of the day and the return to life/springtime.
Xmas has always been a meta holiday. Most are. Enjoy the company of friends and family just as people have for millenia, no matter what banner is hanging over the mantle.

Climate@slrpnk.net•Erasing a Home’s Risks on Zillow Doesn’t Make Them Go AwayEnglish23·3 months ago“Displaying the probability of a specific home flooding this year or within the next five years can have a significant impact on the perceived desirability of that property,” Art Carter, chief executive officer of the California Regional Multiple Listing Service, a private database for real estate brokers and agents, told the Times.
Yea, no shit. That’s the point of including climate risk when it comes to choosing a property.
Flood prone areas don’t pop up overnight. The people in Swannanoa NC were living in a known floodplain that had a massive flood about 100 years ago. Same with the Guadalupe River that averages a major flood every decade. Climate change is making these events larger and more frequent, but excluding data from a real estate listing to supposedly increase home value is nonsense at best and fraud at worst.

From SCOTUSblog,
“Based on two words separated by 16 others in … IEEPA—‘regulate’ and ‘importation’—the President asserts the independent power to impose tariffs on imports from any country, of any product, at any rate, for any amount of time,” Chief Justice John Roberts wrote. “Those words,” he continued, “cannot bear such weight.” “IEEPA,” Roberts added, “contains no reference to tariffs or duties.” Moreover, “until now no President has read IEEPA to confer such power.”
“Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote the main dissent, which was joined by Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.”
