I was talking to my Lyft driver the other day. He was from Eritrea and I asked him, out of all the countries on earth to emigrate to, why did he pick the US, and not one of the emirate states, Europe, South America, etc?

He said he knows people who’ve gone to work in those countries, and at best, you earn enough to survive and that’s it. He said in America, even the lowest wage jobs (gig work driving) pays so much better - he can afford to live and send money home.

A local food cart business owner in [my town] is from Mexico and has lived in the US for 20 years. He has a wife, 3 kids, a home, and a business with employees stateside. He was advised to return to Mexico to do an immigration interview or something (he’s been trying to naturalize for 20 years), and now that he’s in Mexico, he’s being forbidden to return to the US.
