I think I see the point you’re trying to make. I’m not sure if my question is purely aspirational, though. When you say “political realities of Australia” for example, shouldn’t the word “political” already imply that this is heavily influenced by people’s thoughts and resolve? I think Australians should evaluate that, not me who is in Europe or you since you refer to Australia as “they”.

Maybe, and? Do you believe it can change and/or has the right to change?
The conference’s page does not try to pretend that it’s all shiny and perfect right now. Quoting:
Hosting this summit in a major coal port, in the world’s fifth-largest coal producer, sends a powerful message: fossil-fuel-dependent nations want to end their dependence on oil, gas, and coal extraction, but doing so fairly requires unprecedented international cooperation so that no one is left behind.

To what are you replying to really? Does it say anywhere in the original article that the new conference is about the reduction of coal use but not mining? I haven’t found any indications of that; instead, I see mentions that they want to reduce overall “coal dependency” and “coal extraction”:
transitioning away from fossil fuel extraction
oil, gas, and coal extraction
global effort to phase out coal

I think such a trivial thought has come to the organizers of this conference and it’s well addressed.

The original claim was about tracking (“escape the big tech tracking”), so here AWS and Cloudflare are definitely relevant. The content, including input, also flows through them I think? It’s specifically unencrypted if I get it right.

Thanks for your comment. I’m still only learning how legislation in the EU works. However, so far I haven’t been able to confirm what you’re saying. Could you help if you know? (I assume not only me, but possibly other readers, too)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Council_of_the_European_Union
Here it doesn’t say (almost) anything about “trade”. Admittedly I’ve only read 2-3 pages and then used Ctrl+F to search on the rest of the page though… Is it a de-facto split between the legislative powers of the Council and the Parliament? Where to read about it?

there is little doubt that EU chat control will be implemented
Personally, I believe there’s a chance for stopping this. EU is not an authoritarian state. I wouldn’t give up too early – instead would rather fight and provide public pressure for the direction of the law that supports mine and everybody’s freedom.

A much better and desired solution is to stop this law from ever happening by societal pressure, in my personal opinion. I wasn’t born in the EU, but I live here many years now. I choose to believe that EU isn’t fully corrupted, and that many good and meaningful changes are still happening.

If Europe doesn’t fight back strong enough, Chat Control will be one such thing. All your messages being scanned by a “black box” system. Hopes are on the European Parliament and societal pressure to cancel this now. https://www.patrick-breyer.de/en/reality-check-eu-council-chat-control-vote-is-not-a-retreat-but-a-green-light-for-indiscriminate-mass-surveillance-and-the-end-of-right-to-communicate-anonymously/

escape the big tech tracking by installing uBlock Origin
Cloudflare and AWS say “Hi” 👋
UBO is a very good tech that I strongly recommend too though. Just gotta be aware of its limits.

(If you’re ashamed to explicitly point out your country, then… I think you have to deal with that anyway. I don’t know if fighting against the bad actors in your country is a feasible strategy; it’s too easy to give poor advice from far away, imagining yourself an expert where in reality you’re not, so I’m not recommending anything.)

Sorry, *your* president, not mine. I don’t live in the US.

What is a “Cambridge exam system”?

… to google. (Not sure if it’s generalizable to 95% of for-profit corporations by the legal definition of for-profit. But we know for sure about google.)

Why should we care about an AI tailored to that one person whom many consider a fascist?
Negative publicity is also publicity. Please let’s rather ignore this stupidity.
There’s also OpenRA Romanov’s Vengeance, for people looking for this type of stuff. A WIP though, same as this project I think.
On topic: I don’t know, I don’t own any of the newer Pixels. Waiting which new OEM(s) it will be that GOS is collaborating with.
Off-topic: I got actually curious about it, checked my Pixel 6, and indeed it didn’t do anything about the USB-C connected HDMI. Strange, a 100-150 EUR PinePhone supports this but Pixel 6 doesn’t. I guess it makes some sense though, given that PinePhones are targeting developers (at the moment, and for a while).
Hey, welcome to the concept of self-hosting! This is where I was 15+ years ago.
Realistically, I’d just recommend installing something and trying it out. You’ll iterate many time before you’ll slowly start to align somewhere I suspect, in terms of software/approaches etc.
If you want the very first steps, then why not simply connect your old PC to a monitor and install a Desktop version of Mint? It’s super-“wrong”, but it’ll get you started. Once you reach a stage of not wanting to waste memory/CPU on a graphical system, you’ll be able to do something like
systemctl disable lightdm.serviceand voila, graphics don’t load on start anymore. Once you get even more confident, apt remove gdm3 xfce4 xfdesktopwill remove any extra disk space (I’m dropping DE names that I approximately remember off the top of my head). With the packages for graphics gone, your system is indistinguishable from a server now.Overall it’s a nice path to walk, or at least it was fun and somewhat educative and very frustrating and giving a sense of control for me personally. Do you have any specific questions?
