The Ohio Supreme Court on Thursday granted the dismissal of two legal challenges to the map the court previously deemed to be unconstitutionally gerrymandered in favor of Republicans.
The plaintiffs in the lawsuits, which include the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, the League of Women Voters of Ohio, and the A. Philip Randolph Institute of Ohio, had sought the dismissal of their own cases, saying they don’t want voters to be in limbo ahead of the 2024 election.
Some additional context from an earlier AP News article:
The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Ohio and others, told the Ohio Supreme Court that they are willing to live with the U.S. House map approved March 2, 2022, and used in last year’s elections, “(i)n lieu of the continued turmoil brought about by cycles of redrawn maps and ensuing litigation.”
Democrats netted wins under that map — securing five of 15 U.S. House seats, compared to the four of 16 they had held previously.
The dismissal request also comes as advocates prepare a redistricting reform amendment for Ohio’s 2024 ballot. After an initial rejection, the group Citizens Not Politicians resubmitted their petition language Tuesday.
Why even have an election if you’re going to steal it anyway?
Because there’s no longer the threat of gallows and guillotines. But in the United States of Capitalism, pretending there’s ultimate freedom is what’s needed to keep the racket going.
“Be the gallows and guillotines you want to see in the world”

The appearance of legitimacy. Even in Russia they’re still holding elections, while blatantly stuffing ballots on camera and jailing opposition candidates, but for whatever reason, they still continue with the sham of the elections because it makes it more “official”. I kind of scratch my head at it too, it’s like, “None of this is real, why are you even bothering with the charade?” I guess just having a smidge of a process gives true believers something to point to, no matter how small, something that justifies the whole thing.
You can’t be a dictator if 103% of the population vote you in.
You should try to answer this question. Because Putin does the same thing and he’s been a democratically elected president for like two decades. Whereas in what is more of a democracy, many Americans are fed up with nothing happening in their favor and are willing to declare Trump emperor of the universe by any means necessary.
It’s interesting because of what democracy is supposed to mean and what it actually means in practice. More the point, a stolen election is still an election in the democratic process.
I hate living in a red state.
I hate living in a state artificially turned red. Like it might be magenta or something without this bullshit.
Oh hey look! Blatant misuse of terrible laws by republicans in order to steal elections and they’ve been doing it for decades.
Shall we fix this major obviously ridiculous issue? Nah. Let them abuse broken laws for their own gain and America’s downfall.
Twenty two people were born in Ohio. All of them became astronauts. Only one didn’t have any space flights. That means from the moment they were born, they did everything in their power to get as far away from Ohio as they possibly could. Even going as far as leaving the planet. Ohio sucks.
This is always my go-to fact about Ohio, but I usually go with “Ohio has the most astronauts because anyone there with sense will try to get away as far as humanly possible.”
The republic ceased to be a functioning democracy when the Republican Party refused to denounce Trump’s failed coup. That was the end. This is the postscript.
All according to plan.
They shouldn’t have given in.
Somebody feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but reading between the lines here, it looks like the Ohio Supreme Court is majority Republican, and the risk of maintaining the litigation would be that the Court install a map that’s even worse since the swing vote retired (at least according to the linked AP article). If this view is correct, it means this isn’t giving in so much as conceding that the status quo is as good as it gets.
The State Legislature is GOP controlled and they refused to abide by a previous Ohio SC ruling against the maps above.
So, literally a criminal government. Good stuff, can’t imagine why people don’t want to live in Ohio…
Pretty fucked up, I guess Ohio doesn’t get to have a functioning government.
Republicans: “We’ve reviewed your request for technical support and have found the system to be working as intended. This ticket has been closed.”
When one state doesn’t get to have a functioning electoral process, none do.
Republicans dismissed laws that make being a republican harder and making it more fair to anyone else
Shocker
