I have fully transitioned to using Lemmy and Mastodon right when third party apps weren’t allowed on Spez’s place anymore, so I don’t know how it is over there anymore.

What do you use? Are you still switching between the two, essentially dualbooting?

What other social media do you use? How do you feel about Fediverse social media platforms in general?

(I’m sorry if I’m the 100th person to ask this on here…)

In an ever-evolving digital landscape, I am thrilled to immerse myself in the liberating experience of using decentralized platforms like Mastodon, Lemmy, and Pixelfed. Freed from the constraints of centralized social media, I have embarked on a transformative journey. Recognizing the excessive time once consumed by my phone—nearly ten hours a day—I have successfully halved this to around five hours daily, allowing for a healthier balance, with a slight indulgence during weekends.

My commitment to this shift is further evidenced by my conscious decision over the past two years to bid farewell to major platforms such as Twitter and Tumblr. More recently, I have cut ties with Instagram, Facebook, BlueSky, Reddit, and even Snapchat.

In an effort to further champion these alternative platforms and their communities, I am proud to contribute by donating to Mastodon. This initiative not only represents a personal commitment but also an investment in the growth and resilience of decentralized social networks, encouraging more people to explore the boundless opportunities they offer.

Had a Facebook account I completely ignored (set it up for my first girlfriend and we exclusively used Yahoo Messenger) then turned into a music dump, then deleted. I honestly never saw the point of Facebook, not with apps like WhatsApp or even standard SMS evolving as they have, even back then (talking about the 2010s).

Had an Instagram account for about 3 months - surprisingly decent source of grotesque/morbid art! Again, saw no point in this, and Reddit felt superior in all ways.

Mainlined Reddit for a good couple of years, mostly during the Pandemic. By the time I got into it, one could feel its bulk, so to speak. Sure 99.7% of Reddit were the users, but even so, it felt as though subreddit quirks and in-jokes had ossiffied into tennets by that point. Loved it, but it felt constraining here and there.

Switched to Lemmy a couple of months after deleting my Reddit account when shit went down, and it’s all I’ve been using and plan on using. Unless one counts news aggregators as social platforms.

I love this scroungy, spit-and-duct tape feel of the fediverse, to be very honest. Feels like the days when we used to group chat on local network sharing apps, like it’s just the neighbourhood kids around. And it seems to not be dissipating even with the huge increase in users, which is a good sign. Plus the obvious lack of curation other than baseline moderation and/or personal grudges is always nice!

I see it the exact same way!

The way that the fediverse is split up like this, with many instance working with different rulesets really does make it feel like some neighbourhood people coming together to chat.

I especially like the way how, why you chose an instance, you can either stay within the bounds of your own local group, or interact with all the people by switching over to the “subscribed” tab (at least this is the case here on blahaj zone).

Yes, that’s my favourite aspect about it, the interactivity between the various instances and how distinctly unique each instance seems to have become in terms of ethos. It’s wonderful to see so many different ‘tribes’ and be able to interact with all of them!

Lemmy after reddit banned me. I’ve been getting into Bluesky, too. Sometimes Mastodon. I’m open to other suggestions, too.

Imgur if you want memes, cats, and politics, but keep in mind that they’re not much better than reddit. No 3rd party apps, and the official app has ads & sells your data to Facebook. You can block it by using the DDG app and enabling App Tracking Protection, however. Also setting your phone’s DNS server to dns.adguard-dns.com. You should be doing those two things anyway, regardless of what apps you do or don’t use.

It is, I don’t go on Reddit anymore, it’s insanely toxic. I’ve gotten all I could’ve gotten from there anyway. I only use Lemmy nowadays.

These days twitter is where it’s at for keeping up with everything that’s censored everywhere else. There’s nowhere better for Palestine updates. I hear tiktok is good too but I’m no longer a teenager.

Yeah I’m on Lemmy and Mastodon. I also still watch YouTube. They haven’t passed whatever my threshold is for suckitude, yet. I’m sure it’s coming.

I’ve got a private chat with a small group of friends. That’s my primary social media. We share news and discuss ideas.

I stopped using Reddit a few years before the whole stupidity, because the culture was fucking with my head.

Then I did the Mastodons for two years or so, with Lemmy eventually entering the mix. And then as Lemmy got more users and content, it took over as my preferred platform.

“Dualbooting” is a nice analogy, haha. No, I switched completely over from the previous main ones: No Reddit and no Twitter. But I still use dedicated forums for specific topics/software, such as a Romhacking (retro game modding) community or RetroArch forum. Unfortunately not everyone is on Lemmy (or Mastodon, but I stopped using Mastodon too). So for me it is Lemmy/Beehaw and a few standalone forums.

Wait I also started using Discord from time to time, but dislike this as a main application. There is an alternative called “Matrix”, which is similar to what Lemmy and Mastodon are respective to their technology. But its not that widespread, so stopped using it too. Maybe will comeback to it. I know there is BlueSky, which is a main competitor to Mastodon. Just didn’t have enough interested into it yet, as there is Mastodon already.

    • Reddit <> Lemmy and Kbin
    • Twitter <> Mastodon
    • Discord <> Matrix

(I’m sorry if I’m the 100th person to ask this on here…)

Fine with me, as I didn’t saw any of the 99th person asking this before.

I feel that Matrix and Lemmy go really nicely together. There are already some integrations, which let you link from your Lemmy to your Matrix account.
It’s nice that Lemmy directly tells you “These messages are not secure” and recommends Matrix.
If this were driven by a cooperation, they would say “blablabla it’s so secure you can trust us with your data blablabla” but no! This is the fediverse, where people can do what they want to!

Over here, they are self-aware and link to Matrix, which is so refreshing. This kind of open collaboration between projects is beautiful I think.

Also yeah, Mastodon feels weirdly… empty? I use it sometimes and despite it’s apparently larger userbase, I cannot seem to find a good starting point.
Then again, I also didn’t quite understand Twitter, so maybe that’s it.

I think Mastodon is heavily “following” based. I mean you need to find people to follow. I think you can even follow hashtags, which is pretty neat. So lookup if your favorite content creators may have a Mastodon account and follow them. And make sure to enable or disable the “world” view and not just looking at your own feed, if you don’t have much yet. Just some random thoughts. If you are already familiar with this, then apology.

As for the Matrix collaboration, I didn’t think about this working between Lemmy and Matrix. But it make sense. Because there is also some sort of “bridge” setup you can do between Matrix to Discord. I’m not much familiar with that, just read about it.

All of this is neat. But its biggest strength is also its biggest weakness: Being not centralized. It’s kinda like on Linux (and I don’t mean the distributions only). I just wish the entire Fediverse would already cooperate. The lack of a centralized place that has all instances and technologies that are based on Fediverse (Mastodon, Lemmy, video platforms and so on) is a huge missed oppurnity.

Even Instagram, a technology not even based on Mastodon or Fediverse, can cooperate with Mastodon. I never used Instagram, so not sure how this looks in reality. But I thought its worth mentioning here.

Lemmy. For more niche communities that don’t exist on Lemmy I use RSS feeds on specific subreddits. Discord for chatting with friend and other niche communities. LinkedIn because I’m in academia.

no, not really. i kinda quit social media in the sense that i no longer use reddit, instagram, twitter or snap. they were all just too addicting. i log into lemmy once in a while, to see what’s new, since there are some nice niche linux related communities, but apart from that i’m only on youtube (when i’m eating) or on discord (few small-ish servers). i don’t really care much for news or polictics, and if i really need to know what’s going on, i check the front page of wikipedia or ask my friends. i’m still struggling with using my phone more that i’d like, but this week i took a break from discord and youtube, with mixed results so far (see: i’m on lemmy), but overall it’s been really freeing to not be on them and have a bunch more free time.
