My link for this was deleted. Huh. I didn’t see this earier.
Anyways I think this is a dangerous chilling effect and reddit has a terrible track record for not using this as intended, so I can only expect Reddit Admins to use this beyond warning, I expect bans and this used in warrants/NSLs quickly.
Stop using reddit, stop going to reddit. And bring everyone you can to Lemmy. I want to be able to cut out my city subreddits like /r/Denver like a clean shit.
John Spartan, you are fined one credit for violating the upvote morality statute.
Oh no! Anyways…
Basically declaring that they don’t allow free speech.
“Hey, you have been liking things we disagree with and we need an echo chamber here, align with us or fuck off. Sincerely, the money hungry bitches of the internet! Also heil daddy musk!”
To be clear, they’re talking about banning right wing people. Reddit is one of the most liberal platforms you will find.
You can’t even talk economics on Reddit without being downvoted to fuck, or banned.
I am a centrist, and I routinely had posts removed and got banned from communities for saying things from actual textbooks taught currently in universities.
No one is attacking the free speech of the left unless it’s radical and advocating for physical harm.
Incorrect. I got banned yesterday for “Eat the Rich” and Luigi favoritism. I believe the post in question (you never know with a Reddit ban because they dont show you) was responding to someone’s post that mentioned the French Revolution with a Guillotine gif and “Git-r-Done”.
Yea, apparently I was plotting murder or something by doing that.
I mean, advocating for eating people is in itself a crime, so maybe the bot thought you were trying to push for cannibalism? 😂
hypothetically speaking, if someone blew up their office HQ, that would send a powerful message. of course, if you have the balls to do that, there are some other offices that would probably be much better targets.
Basically declaring that they don’t allow free speech.
It’s a privately owned platform. You never have an assurance of free speech on any of those, and on Reddit, the rot set in years ago.
I have a strange opinion, but here goes: The Right to Free Speech (Im in the US here), should protect you from censorship. Doing what Reddit is doing should be considered a Rights violation and we should be able to sue them into the ground.
Well, you are certainly entitled to that opinion even though it’s wrong, and I do think banning you for it is also wrong.
There’s a big difference between having ideas and taking actions. Ideas cannot be allowed to become illegal. Even disgusting ones.
The correct response to unconscionable ideas is social, not institutional.
Terrible idea. Any site that bans for hate speech would also be a rights violation. If a platform doesn’t share your values, leave it.
Yes, sadly, freedom of speech includes freedom of hate speech. The platform would have to rely on its users downvoting or ridiculing the offender rather than outright bans.
See Twitter to see what “free speech absolutism” gets you. The hateful stuff will quickly overrun and take over the platform, chasing decent people away.
Twitter isn’t even remotely pro-free-speech; much like Reddit, they claim to be in order to defend the worst people on the platform, while routinely deleting or banning people for speech they disagree with
That’s correct. But it starts by allowing hate speech. Can you give an example of a single platform that allows it that didn’t become a toxic shithole?
There is a big jump from “we are a private company and we have internal rules” to “we are a private company and our internal rules that directly go against human rights”
Based on what I read in the posted article, everyone is making a big leap here. Of course I expect you all to be right in the end based on Reddit being a shitshow, but we don’t know what the content they are referring to is exactly.
For all we know, they are only referring to stuff like human trafficking or child porn. The statement is vague.
Of course they don’t. They banned me 3 years ago for saying that if you have the chance, you should always punch a Nazi.
Excuse me? If someone says they want a genocide you have to wait until they take over, only then are you allowed to support violence.
I’m against violence, I think that reasonable and even somewhat unreasonable people should be talked with. But if someone says “fuck you I will kill you” you should have the right to punch them, it is the same as self defence, because next time they will kill you.
I know. The two reactions when I tell people about that are usually either rage or amusement. I’m here now, so fuck Reddit.
What was the actual reason they gave when they blocked your account. Because I had one of my accounts banned, but not for any logical reason, and they just gave me a made-up reason of I was being aggressive (I wasn’t being aggressive I was just pointing out to someone that he was gatekeeping, which he was).
For contacts the guy was trying to suggest that the only people who should be allowed to be employed in the software development industry are people with a relevant university level qualification, which was obviously stupid because it would block pretty much all of the current tech billionaires from their own companies.
going to college to learn technology in the 1990s would have been useless for acquiring the skills that I have developed and honed in my 25+ years in tech
They permabanned two of my accounts during the election last year, just because I said I didn’t care when Trump said Liz Cheney should be shot. She’s a warmonger who’s called for violence against millions of innocent people. Not gonna clutch my pearls when anyone (even Trump) threatens her.
I suddenly have an urge to upvote banned content. Talk about being insecure. That post was soon followed up by another of the “we investigated ourselves and found we did nothing wrong” sort.
something more ridiculous is getting banned for reporting someone obviously for one of the rule violation. the MOD can choose when they are in the mood, and ban you if they dont like you reporting someone.
Perma banned because I wished c-ncer on a pro-Israel troll. Is that an earned ban you guys think?
I had an old account banned site wide for asking why there was an obvious gay guy on love island. Wasn’t even a malicious post I was genuinely curious how he faked his way on there.
Recently I got a temp ban for mentioning chatgpt on the books sub, someone was asking about a large selection of books and which were worth reading. I told him to get chatgpt to sort the list out by most popular. Apparantly even mentioning an llm exists there is a ban.
Kinda get the second one as authors all think chatgpt stealing from them or something but yeah I was talking about sorting a large list
Jesus… ITT I learned mods on Reddit are fucking snowflakes.
Why the hell would you go on a book community, open a discussion post that is clearly asking for personal opinions and go “I dunno lol go ask chatgpt”. I would’ve banned you too tbqh.
Well how else are you going to sort a list of about 30 books to decide which are worth time or not. The guy had bought an anthology of every Alien/Aliens novel and was complaining a lot of the books in it were really bad and wanted help knowing which ones are actually worth reading.
I just reply to things that show up my feed honestly and pretty randomly in fact that’s why I’ve posted here as well.
By TALKING TO PEOPLE
I replied because nobody was helping him and there’s an easy solution. Didn’t know r/books was now back in the dark ages to be fair.
Hell, I said all Nazis can go die or kill themselves. Perm banned. Reason why I’m here. Fuck that place.
Yup. I said things about Elon and Trump and how they are nazis supporting nazis like Putin commiting war crimes and I got a warning. Reddit can get lost.
Samesies. All I said was Nazis should get punched. This is a much better place all around, so fuck spez
… But all Nazis can go die or kill themselves.
100% agree. I can even help if they want!
Not gonna lose a lot of sleep over a hateful asshole getting banned from a website.
All hateful assholes believe their brand of hate is justified, just as you do.
Zionists deserve all the vitriol they get.
If you want to call hating on Nazis “hateful” then by all means but other than child rapists and rapists in general. I fucking hate Nazis and they can all go die for I care. That group murdered millions. They deserve all the hate they get, all the way till the end of time.
I got banned when I saw someone say trans kids should be hunted in schools, and I told them I wish they’d get hit with a brick.
Thats be wise you where too much of a pacifist in your response.
I got banned for making fun of Kemi Badenoch when she said autistic people are privileged. I said maybe she’s jealous that there are people that know more about trains than her. That was apparently enough to warrant a permanent ban.
You’re a monster.
I had my 13 year old account banned on reddit and the ‘final’ statement was saying ‘No, just the problems they deserve blame for’ to a Zionist who accused all Lebanese people of blaming all of Lebanon’s problems on Israel.
Just saying that apparently is a call to violence against Jews…
I wished cancer on plenty pro putinist, pro stalinist, pro genocide pieces of shit and got permad as well.
I have so much free time now.
Ew
Fuuuuuuuuuck spez
The police should check his hard drive
1000%
That’s the pedophile piss baby aka u/spez aka Steve Huffman, right? As in the guy that moderated a pedo sub?
What a greedy little pis baby pig boy.
Is this after it is banned or before it is banned? Either way, seems ridiculous
They mean content that violates the terms of service.
i heard peoples new accts get banned very quickly after giving “upvotes”.
Its so obvious Reddit is just swarming with bot users. Not sure why most users haven’t just come to Lemmy already.
- Niche communities
- Addictive algorithms
- Fediverse complexity
I honestly dont think its complicated. People who cant figure it out or look on YouTube wouldn’t probably have great ideas to share. 😆
Reminds me of back in 2013 when Reddit admins accidentally revealed that Eglin Air Force Base, a location often cited as the source of government social-media propaganda/astroturfing programs, was the most Reddit addicted city in the world.
To be fair, every Air Force base had higher than average Reddit usage back in the day. It was one of the few websites not blocked by default. I don’t know when that changed, Because I was out before then.
But yes, there are also the propaganda teams.
I would expect Moscow or St Petersburg.
Reddit being the go to place for federal workers to explain what is happening on the fednews sub given reddit shadow banning new accounts and anti VPN stance is rather ironic with federal workers hiding their names and using stuff like signal out of fear of what the administration might do to them.
Even proxies are not safe, only the more sophisticated ones usually evade reddits detection for a while.
I remember Reddit. I used to like it there.
can someone explain to me the difference between corporate and government censorship, when corporations and the government are definitely fucking?
One is illegal, the other is not.
and does that word mean anything in this context?
No. Nothing reddit is doing is illegal. When you sign up for a service like reddit, there is a TOS, which allows them to ban, warn, limit interaction, etc, at their discretion when terms of their TOS are violated.
If their TOS doesn’t allow pictures of butterflies, and you post pictures of butterflies, you will receive a warning. Continue posting butterflies, you’ll get banned, until eventually receiving a permaban. There is absolutely nothing illegal about it, because their TOS specifically states no butterfly pictures.
People get mad over government censorship, but condone corporate censorship if it’s something they want censored.
Going against an agreement you agreed to abide by is not censorship. If you don’t like the agreement, don’t agree to it.
Reddit is a piece of shit.
At this point being banned might be a good thing to drive home the point that also my favorite of the old corporate internet platforms should be avoided. I’m doing quite okay on staying away from Meta and have long deleted my Twitter account. I can’t get myself do drop Reddit somehow. Seems like they’re only helping me get off my addiction
