Jeff Widener, the photographer who took this photo, describes the protests. He wasn’t feeling well because a protester had smashed him in the head with a rock. His description starts at 2m30s.

I think it’s pretty awesome that the tank drivers didn’t flatten the guy.

They did, however, flatten many other students with tanks during that protest.

They didn’t, they beat them to death in the side streets and disappeared known leaders, get it right!

Also the diplomatic cable that refers to armor units attacking the protestors in the Square which was denied by journalists on site specified APCs, jeez.

Fyi to others: You can search images of bikes completely flattened with blood all around them and other pictures of protesters laying on the ground among bikes with injuries no human could inflict without something very heavy. I remember first seeing these pictures in the 2000s. Horrific.

Yeah, in the West they would have just rolled right over the top of him.

(Incidentally, it’s interesting that westerners post this - truncated - clip almost constantly, yet most of them have never even seen a photo of Rachel Corrie)

Incidentally, thousands of people were killed in Tiananmen Square. Even today, people are being oppressed for even talking about it.

there are multiple versions of the clip and the associated lore floating around and if you don’t spend enough time with what happened at the time you can easily be convinced of a variety of viewpoints

Occam’s razor, you’re on the Internet, bad crops are practically a meme. Personally, I distinctly remember watching the entire uncropped video multiple times throughout grade school and high school in the US

Americans (in 1775): Declares war with one of the most powerful empires in history over taxes

The French: Decapitates the upper classes due to hoarding wealth and creating class imbalance

Haitians: Fights against their former masters in the name of freedom and the end of slavery

The French (again): Fights back against one of the most cruel regimes in history to free their occupied homeland from Nazi rule

Americans (now): “Oh I hope that if the message on my sign is passive aggressive enough the fascists will leave the government out of shame.”

The Boston Tea party got started because of a tax cut from the British Empire. It was a whole different bunch declaring war than what people are lead to believe.

Yeah, you need the wealthy with time and resources to be on your side or else you are just the peasants revolting which they all already think we are.

Yeah. The smugglers were making bank though.
Its kinda the rule that the government is filled with old mafia once they realize they can make a lot of money being the government.

So I guess in this case we need the companies that are acting as mafia to want the change. Which brings us back to the wealthy.

I saw the full video, he eventually climbs up the tank and then is forcefully taken away. He never gets run over.
