One more step towards the US becoming an NK clone. This is a good opportunity for Loops to advertise themselves as the anti-Tiktok.

Have you not been paying attention? Trump tested the waters of attacking Panama, Greenland, and absorbing Canada as a “51st state”. He really wants a war SOMEWHERE so he can try to halt the next election. It has to be close and scary, or Americans won’t bat an eye. We are so used to wars elsewhere.

MAGA will 100% believe it if he says Canada is sending fentanyl over on a nuke or something and they will be excited to go to war over it.

I re-affirm my previous statement. I can’t even comprehend the idea of the US attacking Canada. It would be extremely stupid of him and I don’t think the people around his orbit would allow it because it would endanger all of them.

When? Right after his economy starts tanking. He’s cut off a lot of his trading partners. He’s going to need money and resources fast. Canada has a lot of resources he needs, despite how hard he tries to claim otherwise.

He has threatened our annexation since his first term, although in a ‘joking’ way. This time he started the threats before he’d even been sworn in and he hasn’t stopped. He is still threatening annexation of Canada. He has not backed down. He has not apologized. He means it.

He’s a critically stupid man, but he’s an extremely dangerous one and his statements need to be taken seriously.

They already attacked Iran without official declaration of war. That orange bastard wants to get Bagram back even though the Taliban would just laugh and let the Chinese take it.

Any fascist government requires the need for constant conflict and scapegoats for which to keep itself existing to reign. This includes even threatening to invade countries with punitive military campaigns. Or punishing certain states for “disloyalty” and growling to send troops and cops to “occupy” them.

Nazi Germany had a bad geographical location. Strong powers to the east and west, including the UK as unsinkable aircraft carrier and staging ground for invasion. The USA has none of these issues. It’s surrounded by big oceans and militarily weak neighbors. A naval invasion of the USA is basically impossible.

The USA can do whatever they want in all countries in the Americas. Not even a worldwide coalition could stop that.

The USA could invade and annex Mexico and Canada quite easily.

The USA can also afford to intervene military across the globe, get stuck in a quagmire for years, and it doesn’t endanger their control over their own country.

Thankyou. I’m right now watching Internet Today’s coverage of it, which also confirmed it. There’s also this interesting snippet from the CNBC article they quote from:

“No representatives from ByteDance were present at the signing, and the company hasn’t acknowledged that a transaction is taking place. No purchase price was mentioned, and there’s no indication that the Chinese government has made changes to laws that would be necessary for a deal to take place.”

Yeah, I get it different people learn differently, but the search function on TikTok is pretty good. They got a good algorithm behind it, don’t just write it off, at least fuck around with it before you throw it in the trash, please I’m begging you. You only have to give it about 10 minutes before the algorithm starts getting in its groove and that would be a good time before it’s an under American control just to look at what it was

Short form video is the single best propaganda machine there is. You don’t get context, so it’s easy to manipulate events. Also, for some reason, people really fall for the “authority” of some rando talking into a camera like they know what the hell they’re talking about.

Every time somebody shows me a TikTok video as a reference or to make a point, the information is either fake or completely incorrect.

Not to mention, The algorithm feeds you more of these talking heads and makes you think it’s the general consensus

For me its general dislike for influencers and platforms where people are encouraged to put a face behind content, go viral, and make money off of due to tending to attract content from people coming off like aspiring infomercial hosts. Like labubu I didn’t even know about until South Park, so it was like kind of awe inspiring what a huge hive mind of mass reach it can be for those part of it.

But then again I don’t like twitch and most big YouTube content creators either for a similar reason, so I might be just an anomaly when it comes to social media. I don’t like Twitter and Instagram either.

I’ve preferred social media where people interact for the sake of interacting, since the foundation for potential monetary pay off or fame is really poor for that. So more message board type stuff like lemmy, reddit, and old school forums. Things where there’s less of a chance of someone going in to try to turn it into a side hustle.

It is too social for me. I’m not interested in a platform that tends to push people to put a face or name behind an account. I prefer it to just be like the conversation we are having now where you are just another random user name.

And I perceive more positives to not using social media like tiktok, twitter, threads, or Instagram with huge corporate backing and invasive apps than using it. And times those social media even comes up as a useful search result has been pretty much zero. So that’s just a big pass on tiktok for me. Even more so with the leadership change.

Never really understood the culture of gormlessly scrolling through mind-numbing content.

It was less a “cultural thing” and more a functional drift. From the RSS feed to Web2.0 timelines to feed by preference to The Algorithm of ad-promoted content.

Like with email, it wasn’t always just a fountain of spam. Our systems have been deliberately and predatorially enshittified.

There’s a great deal of real news that goes through the app. It’s the majority of the content I see.

          Is there though?

I know this sounds sarcastic, but I’m genuinely curious as I have never used TikTok at all. It there any way to verify the stuff that’s being shown? Do news accounts link to articles or any supporting information?

All I’ve ever really seen from people sharing stuff has been new typical meme stuff and AI generated crap that people keep sending me thinking it’s real.

How can you tell if what you’re seeing is real?

The good “creators” to follow for news generally provide a summary in Tiktok, then if you want to verify or learn more they have additional information and sources in their other locations (substack is a big one)

I can generally tell if it’s AI generated, and if I have any suspicion then I try to find other reports and real sources via Google searches and whatnot. Like I didn’t believe the gold trump statue, or the trump and Epstein statue were real.

I’ve been averse to trends like this, but I did get on Facebook and Insta this summer at the urging of some friends (I run a nonprofit so it’s useful to network). By last week I had both apps on my phone and was just numbscrolling through Insta videos. Realized my mental health had gone to absolute shit in weeks. Deleted the apps andI’m feeling myself again.

It really is dangerous what they’ve created, if I didn’t have ambition, I would be right there zombified.

I sometimes feel like the only mf around who doesn’t and never used tiktok. From the very start it just gave off bad vibes, and then all the news started coming out about it rotting your attention span away, data collection and russian manipulation winning hearts of young people, which pretty much confirmed my suspicions. Ironically reddit feels like a much safer platform than tiktok.

You know, given how exploitative and harmful TikTok has been from the start, it might have been better never to use it at all.

I’m guilty of being on TikTok too, mainly used to keep up with a few artists I listen to, but at the end of the day, the platform is just another exploitative data-harvesting machine.
