For this Friday Movie Night, first up is There’s Still Tomorrow (2023), an Italian satire/drama/black-comedy about a housewife in Italy in 1946 who, who, inspired by the upcoming women’s suffrage referendum, decides to assert herself against her terrible husband and attain a better life for her children. Much satire of patriarchy ensues, along with some cartoonish caricatures, musical numbers, and dark humor. This is the only directorial credit to date of Paola Cortellisi, who previously acted in a bunch of silly Italian comedies. Reviews compare this to Promising Young Woman (2020) often. This is one of the highest-rated and most popular Italian films on Letterboxd, so we’ll check it out.

After that is Klute (1971), a neo-noir about a detective, the eponymous Klute (Donald Sutherland) hired to investigate the disappearance of a businessmen, and ends up protecting a prostitute (Jane Fonda) from a deranged maniac stalking her. Unfortunately for them, neither knows the identity of the guy, and so, a mystery ensues, taking them through the seedy underbelly of the call-girl world. The two can’t stand each other, but who knows, maybe they’ll come to see that there’s more to each other than meets the eye. Guess we’ll have to watch to find out. Director Alan J. Pakula is the guy behind such other thrillers as All the President’s Men (1976) and The Parallax View (1974); surprisingly, we have not watched any of his films yet on the ‘tube. This is considered one of his best works, so let’s give it a whirl.
