Wil’s got a point, guys.
Also, yes get a bigger fence, but also fuck the Prime Directive whenever you feel like it, apparently.
To be fair they wanted to execute a child for tripping. Fuck the Prime Directive in that case and fuck that planet. There should very much be a clause for protecting your own citizens provided they’re literal children.
Its definitely a case of “um, yeah, your application to ever join the Federation has been denied, pending you not having incredibly stupid laws”.
Which is a real thing in canon. Bajor’s application was put in jeopardy when they briefly reinstated a caste system, which violated Federation equality rules.
I’m surprised them being a theocracy didn’t disqualify them.
A theocracy with gods, who in fact exist. I guess that made the difference?
Moved it from theocracy to fandom
They’re actually a republic. The Vedek Assembly has a lot of influence, but they’re fully separate from the Provisional Government. And they only have that much influence because the vast majority of the population follows the Bajoran faith. Think of the Assembly like the Vatican - powerful when everyone cares (Pope during the Middle Ages), but virtually powerless when nobody does (Pope now).
provided they’re literal children
Yeah, you could just remove that part. There’s no sense on holding the non-intervention principle so high that you comply with every crazy request from the natives.
Well, no, it must be left in because if you stick with your part of “every crazy request” then it completely ignores the entire spirit and purpose of the Prime Directive. Starfleet isn’t the be all and end all of morality. Their decisions affect them and the people within it but they’re not “Team America: Space Police.” They don’t go around judging which laws are good and which aren’t. ESPECIALLY when that perspective comes from them and them alone. Different cultures have different beliefs. Ignoring them and imposing your own on everyone is imperalistic as hell and directly against what Starfleet stands for.
Adding a clause to children works for me because the only purpose is to protect the children. The Prime Directive is still able to stand and work between cultures but this way Starfleet is able to say “Our cultures matter too and our culture says children whos brains aren’t done developing shouldn’t be executed for a mistake.” Sure it’s still fucked up that they’d do it to adults but they’re adults. They made their decision and their decision led to them doing stupid shit on an alien planet, fucking around and finding out.
Not complying with requests is not the same as imposing your morality. Nopping out of the contact with some population because they believe your people must be killed won’t destroy their culture.
But then, yeah, the show would have to contain hard decisions, and would be completely different from Star Trek (at least the newer ones).
If you want to make a point you can do so without needing to bash newer Treks for absolutely no reason. Just tired of this petty behavior. I’m out. I’ve got no time for this nonsense.
You should watch The Orville, it’s like Star Trek with the training wheels taken off.
To be fair, I would probably hate a series like Star Trek but with the hard decisions. (I don’t like TOS and it’s only minimally less utopian.)
But I’m looking into this one. I have the impression it’s a comedy?
It has comedic elements, but I wouldn’t call it a comedy. It’s hard for me to describe honestly. Perhaps an homage to trek? A lot of trek fans enjoyed it, some going to far as to say it was “more trek” than discovery.
They also have a lot of trek cast members make guest appearances, which is always a treat.
Yeah but the principle of it is to let them evolve on their own, when you’re already on their planet and they try to kill one of you then it’s different rules.
If it wasn’t then the romulans could just announce their new law makes being human illegal and Starfleet would just have to power down their shields and let them kill us all.
I think you’ve considerably misunderstood what the Prime Directive is… It doesn’t just apply to unevolved people. It also applies to civilizations that have warp too.
Also literally no, that is not what it means and is an insane comparison.
No you’ve just got it compartmentalized in your head into happy little feel good boxes because you don’t want to think about the actual complexity of reality (well fictional reality)
It’s insane not because it’s a bad comparison but because it makes clear the insanity in your worldview (or galactic view I guess)
No. You just don’t know what you’re talking about lol
Might as well be listening to a Republican scream about climate change. Same ignorant/uneducated energy lmao
They let Tasha Yar duel to the death because some dude had the hots for her.
They weren’t a pre-warp culture, the Prime Directive doesn’t apply.
Part of it states that while visiting other planets, following their rules since they’re host.
Wrong. I dunno why so many people falsely believe this. The Prime Directive applies to EVERY civilization. Not just pre-warp ones. By that logic, Picard wouldn’t have had a problem taking Wesley in that episode because those people had warp access.
Hey! You don’t fuck the prime directive. The prime directive fucks you.
It’s funny I like Will about as much as I dislike Wesley, he’s seems like a great guy and often very funny
Yeah, as far as child stars go, he turned out more well adjusted than the vast majority it seems.
lol remember when wil was bullied off the fedi?
they should start their own lemmy instance.
He was what?! If that’s true it’s a shame. We all hate Wes but hating on Wil is not cool at all.
That stinks. I could see him being treated very nicely around here, but maybe the same jackasses would just follow him.
Oh fuck! That is terrible. We should try to make up for it imo. Official invite to startrek.website when?
I’m sure he has an anonymous account so that he can interact with the world like the rest of us… in blissful anonymity.
Why stay on a site that reacts like that to your actual person though? I don’t blame him at all for leaving
The site doesn’t react to him that way, only the depraved ones that know it’s him. Those types of people are everywhere not just on certain sites. If he was anonymous then he wouldn’t interact with those depraved… or only as often as us randos do.
It’s been enough people to have become a problem
To be honest the best thing Wil Wheaton can do is touch grass.
The internet is a toxic place and it’s actually a net boon to your mental health if you stay away from it.

You reflecting on yourself, hun?
Not sure how you get there, I’m not sniveling because the internet doesn’t respect my dubious celebrity lmao.
Comment sail over your head, hun?
You can frame it whatever way you want to feel good about yourself. I still don’t give a fuck over here
Be more like Wil, less like Wesley.
No. What happened?
That’s way too long. Wil tends to whine a lot, so idk if he just couldn’t handle Fediverse or if he was actually bullied. Do you have a TLDR?
I read most of it (skimming some paragraphs) and it sounds like he got dog piled with “go fuck yourself Westley” and other memes constantly and also mass reported while being told to apologize for being transphobic (which he claims he isn’t and says he has apologized for whatever made people think that but the demands for apology never stop).
Admin told him his account is banned because he doesn’t want to deal with the reports Wil also was saying it wasn’t just people from that instance who harassed him and in some places like a painting section he was welcomed and had some good experiences.
Overall he said it was a bad experience and that maybe because of his reputation he will never be able to enjoy social media when people know who he is.
I probably missed some stuff or maybe misunderstood some of what he said and obviously this is his reasons paraphrased.
FWIW I know very little about him outside of the memes. No idea why people think he is transphobic or any other reason they may hate him.
The transphobic accusations are wild. He is incredibly supportive of transexuals, openly voicing his support on Facebook and Reddit all the time. That kind of goes to show how heavily weaponized and dishonest those types of bigotry accusations have become. I do think he complains an awful lot for a guy who has lived a charmed life, but from everything I’ve seen, he’s an open-minded, progressive, liberal, accepting, and loving person. He’s definitely the kind of person who should be considered an ally to the LGBTQ+ communities.
Yeah I’ve never got that kind of bad vibe from him. I also left out the part where he even touched on how privileged his life is and how grateful he is for that or how he said him being harassed for being transphobic is nothing like what LGBTQ+ people have to go through.
It’s really shitty as it’d be cool to have someone like him showing up randomly on Lemmy like other celebs kind of do on Reddit (Arnold Schwarzenegger only one coming to mind at the moment).
Maybe he will give it another shot someday but I guess I don’t see there ever not being a huge group of people waiting to harass him.

Did you just “shut up Wesley” Wil Wheaton?
“What happened? No not like that. I require my information to be spoon fed or in bite sized chunks.”
Bruh.
“I wonder if he was actually bullied” with “Will tends to whine a lot” in the exact same sentence. I love how self-aware people are over here.
Saying someone whines a lot in a 3rd party conversation is not bullying. Bullying is constantly antagonizing someone until it causes them harm. I made a personal observation one time, somewhere that Wil isn’t even involved.
Leave it to you to define what “bullying” is huh
We can use the stop bullying org definition , or the Merriam Webster definition:
abuse and mistreatment of someone vulnerable by someone stronger, more powerful, etc.
My singular comment doesn’t fall within either of those.
Cheers
lol you just did the TLDR perfectly.
I can definitely see him commenting like that. He used to regularly pop up on reddit as /u/wil.
Oh 100%. He’s a delightful man. Still so frustrated at the people who made him quit Twitter ages ago with the constant “Shut up Wesley” shit.
I also miss his presence on the internet, but part of what drove him away was the reaction to him promoting a block list that targeted trans folks
I’m sorry but that entire blog post is complete garbage and not worth even remotely paying attention to.
The majority of it is whining that Wil promoted a blocklist on twitter. That blocklist was originally made to block trolls and stuff but it ran out of support. One of the people working on it pushed their own which Wil supported. What Wil didn’t know, and what many other people who were sharing the tool has no idea about, was that the user had introduced personal blocks into that list and used it as their own thing to go trans people they had beef with. Wil openly admitted to not knowing this and trying to fix the problem in his own blocklist. The article then seems to bash Wil repeatedly for this fact while leaning on “Well he didn’t share the tools enough to fix the problem!” as the sole reason why Wil should be shamed for this mistake. He made a mistake. He was not actively targeting trans people or bashing them. Framing it that he was is the most disingenuous bullshit I can think of.
“However, the most recent dust-up with Wheaton wasn’t about trans specific issues at all but over his friendship with Chris Hardwick.” Also not a remotely valid complaint as the accusations against Chris Hardwick were made by one woman, was investigated, and found to be demonstrably false. I’m not about to shame Wil for being friends with someone who didn’t do anything wrong. So much so that I’m going to quote Wil Wheaton himself on that debacle because I refuse to put anymore effort into it.
I’m not going to apologize to people who were let down by me, because I waited for the facts to come in instead of rushing to join their angry mob. Chris was investigated multiple times and cleared of every accusation, by all of them. And that’s still not good enough for some people, who I also will not apologize to. If ANYTHING his accuser said were true, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. Because fundamental values matter. I am not and will not be friends with someone who sexually assaults another person or any of the other things she lied about, and I’m insulted that you think I would be.
Let me be really clear about this: she didn’t exaggerate. She didn’t take things out of context. She straight up LIED. She made things up that aren’t true. She lied about multiple events that I and others witnessed. And there is so much more you don’t know about, because it was never made public. So I didn’t make a friendship exception, because there was no friendship exception to be made. After the facts came in, I stood with and supported my friend who didn’t do any of the things he was accused of doing. I stood by my friend who was cleared multiple times by multiple investigations. I stood by my friend who I had LONG and DIFFICULT conversations with, as I went through every single accusation with him, in my personal effort to get to the truth.
I know there are people who just don’t want to hear this, because they would possibly feel bad about being part of that angry mob, but that doesn’t make it less true: Chris was in a toxic relationship that was unhealthy and horrible. I had a front row seat to it. They were TERRIBLE together. They fought all the time. They brought out the absolute worst in each other. It was awful. All of that is true. And none of the things she said about him in her essay happened. That is also true. She made it all up, because, in her own words, she couldn’t let him “win” when they broke up, whatever the fuck that meant.
I’ve given you a lot more of my time than I wanted to. I’m just real sick and tired of this lie about Chris going unchallenged by people who paid attention to the lie and then either ignored or rejected the truth when that truth came out.
So to recap: Wil Wheaton is “problematic” for making a genuine mistake and for backing up his friend who did nothing wrong.
Yeah. Doesn’t seem that problematic to me.
And this right here is why I don’t do Xitter or Tumblr. Getting this worked up over esoteric personal details of C-list podcast hosts is just not worth my time or mental energy. I’m glad there are people like you to keep things straight like you did here, but my god, these keyboard warriors have way too much time on their hands.
Litigating a stranger’s legal troubles isn’t their job. There’s literally a system for that already.
Exactly. I don’t want to do this shit but if I see someone lying or actively misrepresenting reality then I’m going to point it out.
even before Musk Twitter was a shithole,I thought the cancel culture was just fascist right wingers complaining for not being able to be racist online, then they cancelled one of my favorite youtube creators Lindsay Ellis, she made a video about it it’s fucked up https://youtu.be/C7aWz8q_IM4?si=eGC5Cx2_UP7bTQh6
This is my biggest problem with the left. You have to agree with all their opinions. Identify with all their beliefs, or you’re a nazi. J.K. Rowling is a good example. Donated millions of dollars to worthy causes. Huge feminist. Staunch leftist. But disagree with one subject regarding .000001% of the population (T people stuff)? Boom. She’s a bigoted, nazi transphobe.
This is a small example of cancel culture, but there’s this bi-annual video game speed running marathon called Games Done Quick (GDQ). They raise a few million dollars every six months for the Cancer Foundation and Doctors Without Boarders. When that new Hairy Potter video game dropped, not only did GDQ ban that game from participating in their event, they banned ALL Hairy Potter video games.
this is not a left vs right issue, if you had actually bothered to watch the video you’d know that “diet nazis” were glad to take Lindsay Ellis down.
in fact right-wing, fascists will gladly push cancel culture themselves, they mostly don’t care, but it’s another form of power they can abuse.
You have to agree with all their opinions. Identify with all their beliefs, or you’re a nazi.
maybe on the internet, but then you can go outside and touch grass and realize that that shit doesn’t matter.
Boom. She’s a bigoted, nazi transphobe.
I mean, she is a transphobe, she is not just disagreeing with that stuff, she is actively pushing her own shit that’s labelled as TERF. She is donating too.

This is my biggest problem with the left.
Clown behaviour. Take a week off.
i was very disappointed to read about his experience on mastadon as well.
wil was one of the reasons i jumped onto reddit very early on, he was around before subreddits even hit. its disappointing he isnt a part of this new nonsense.
People fucking suck. I hate humanity sometimes. Well, most times.
This is a real post, for what it’s worth, and that’s Wil Wheaton’s real Tumblr.
Took me a while to remember that one weird episode.
It would blow my mind to have Wil on Lemmy. I bet he’d be fun and all around cool.
The issue is he’d probably not say he’s Wil Wheaton. I could be Wil Wheaton for all you know. Maybe we’re all Wil Wheaton.
Sounds like something Wil would say.
Well, he’s “wil” on Reddit. I imagine he’d have a “public” account here too even if he prefers a private alt.
So I wil(l) welcome us all!
Where can I see these shapely twinks in linen thongs?
Star Trek: The Next Generation, season one, episode eight, “Justice”.
