Single cab trucks prioritize cargo space over seating space, generally having only a single bench seat that fits 2 adults and a child, or three often uncomfortable adults. This truck prioritizes cargo space to a much greater degree, having only a single seat, so it’s aggressively “single cab”.

10·1 day agoThose are stir bars.
That they’re magnetic is propaganda to push magnetic field bunk to sell more so-called “magnets”. Stir bars are moved by phlogiston, which is why the liquid medium is often heated in tandem.

4·3 days agoThe price of biologics kills me. I know it costs about $20 dollars for a month of GLP-1 agonists, because I’ve made similar peptides myself in grad school. Something like a Solid Phase Peptide Synthesizer runs $10-250K, but the cost to synthesize a 40 amino acid linear peptide at industrial scale is like…$0.30 USD per milligram. Shorter chain peptides are even cheaper. A 15AA linear peptide can be as low as $0.01/mg.
There are of course other expenses, especially labor, facilities, certification, and waste disposal, but these companies are still easily making 40-50% profit margins on biologics. Compare this to non-biologics pharmaceutical profit margins around 15-25%, or for other industry comparisons, grocery stores around 1-3%, restaurants 3-10%, and software at 15-20%.

15·6 days agoI still remember the rage I felt when I first realized that the United States justice system is fundamentally adversarial. Prosecuting attorneys don’t want to find the truth of the matter. The build the strongest case possible and it’s on the defendant to prove they’re wrong. Attorneys are supposed to take into account all available evidence, but have no obligation to seek additional information that could exonerate the defendant, even if it’s clear such information exists.
It’s absolutely fucked.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•The body of a contortionist while performing a trick. This X-ray also shows that a significant part of the spine does not bend.English
10·10 days agoIt’s a CT (computerized tomography) scan. It still uses X-rays but the results are in 3D so one can view “slices” of the image from different perspectives.
The sternum is in the the same plane as the spine from this angle, so that’s why there’s only the slightest hint of a ribcage and only the sternum - this slice is well past rib bones.
Similarly the shoulder is much closer to the viewer’s perspective in the 3d model, so it’s not shown at all.
Edit: misinterpreted CT slice location.
Great explanation, well done!
Doing this in the theater was awesome, but it was difficult getting a responsible sober person to shepherd a group of people tripping balls safely there and back. That’s a much harder job than many people realize.
I’ve been gambling before and it was fun when I won money. The thing is I know how, with few exceptions with games like poker and blackjack (and only then if you’re skilled), you will ALWAYS lose more money than you win over long enough of a time period.
I’m a big, walking math machine, though, so I’ve been the person getting a little too tipsy at the roulette table and telling everyone exactly how probability works and that numbers are never “hot”. The roulette dealer was surprisingly amused.
OMG this is great. Thanks for the recommendation!

Cars - For Car Enthusiasts@lemmy.world•Gas nears $5. Why aren’t electric vehicles selling in the US?English
12·15 days agoI completely agree. I live in a major metropolitan area but most of my family lives in a shit hole, rural, regressive state with awful infrastructure in general, and even then they’re out in the sticks for a rural state. I’ve driven our electric car to and from there, a 10-11 hour drive, over ten times in the last few years without a single issue. This last trip I stayed in an even more remote area with access only to a 15A 120V outlet. No problems and I paid 1/4 the cost of driving our ICE secondary vehicle.
I’ve taken several other trips all throughout the Midwestern United States without problems. Only once did I have a somewhat tense drive on a trip from the sweltering armpit of the United States, rural Arizona, up to Vancouver BC, and only because I chose a more direct route that my trip planner warned would stretch the capabilities of my battery. I kept it at 60 mph, coasted down hills instead of regenerating, and arrived at the next charger with 20% charge, 10% higher than estimated and enough to make it to the NEXT charger without charging.
Sure it’s anecdotal, but I’ve literally saved thousands of dollars versus an ICE vehicle. I don’t mind spending a little time planning for long distance trips.

3·25 days agoYep, it’s all cumulative. I think the “weight loss is in the kitchen” advice helps those who don’t understand weight loss is a function of net calories, so start exercising and eat more because they think exercise somehow magically makes weight go away. If only I had a nickel for every time I heard “weight lifting converts fat into muscle” over the years…
My aunt is a great example. She started doing daily walks to lose weight but picked up a “healthy protein smoothie” from a local coffee shop on the way home. She slowly gained weight because they were more like milkshakes and easily had 500+ calories per serving.
It’s also a great game if you like solving complicated puzzles. Last I knew, there are some that are still unsolved.

Technology@lemmy.world•Plex increasing Lifetime Plex Pass cost to whopping $750English
3·27 days agoThere is at least one TV application that doesn’t support local streaming without first logging into Plex’s servers. I have an LG tv and it’ll hang at the loading screen, then error out if I don’t have Internet connectivity. I love the TV but LG as a company sucks. I wouldn’t buy it again.

politics @lemmy.world•Schiff Proposes Bill Requiring Data Centers to Pay for Own Power
36·28 days agoGiven we have the technology, any new construction should be required to be environmentally neutral at a minimum, ideally with ongoing improvement.
If they need to use millions of gallons of groundwater? Great, go fucking wild, but directly fund managed aquifer recharge projects to replace that groundwater at an equal or greater rate.
Increases in resource consumption should be covered entirely by the data center plus improvements to benefit the community.
No longer should big business be used as a means to siphon the value of labor and natural resources and concentrate it for selfish use by the worst of humanity.
If you genuinely want to change and find a therapist who can help you find the right resources to do it, it’s invaluable.

It’s “full self driving (supervised)” last I checked.
