It actually is the most hilarious of ironies that despite what very real harm Thor might have inflicted upon the early stages of the movement through misinformation/mischaracterization; The fact is, I don’t think this movement would have come near to exploding the way that it has recently if not for the perfect Rube Goldberg machine of drama surrounding this man in the past 6 months.

Seriously. He could not have Barbara Streisand effected the “Stop Killing Games” movement harder if he tried. It really is such poetic justice. It’s a shame that I don’t live in the EU or I would gladly sign the initiate myself. Here’s to hoping that another EU regulation can have sweeping effects for the US. As a reluctant and very jaded US citizen myself, I harbor no illusions about any real and meaningful consumer protection regulations to ever make it over here. Mega-corpos have simply spent far too much money buying out every level of government, legislature, and regulatory bodies that exist.

Europe really is like a strange beacon of hope for US consumers, as odd as that sounds. Fight the good fight for us as well, brothers.

he also cheats in single player puzzle games

of course there is no way to definitely prove that, which was probably an intentional tactic, but certain puzzles he “solved” in “hours” took a whole community weeks to figure out (brute force was the only way) and there’s no way he’s just happened to guess the right answer

Peace of life advice, don’t let other people tell you how to think, form your own opinions based on the things you value and experience.

Thor exist, and so do a lot of people that are a lot worse. He gets at more hate than he deserve when people like Jordan Peterson exist.

Also, you don’t have to watch his videos. You can just ignore him and move on with your life. There are better things to do with your time than to hate someone.

He has literally said that the MS Paint doodles aren’t meant to be super descriptive or helpful. He started doing it in his meetings at Blizzard, because he found that any visual aid was good at keeping executives’ attention. Whenever he had to do a presentation, he’d use MS Paint every few minutes to keep them focused.

And now he does the same with his viewers. He busts out MS Paint every few minutes, just to refocus the viewers and keep them engaged. It’s not to help with whatever he’s describing; it’s just to keep the viewers engaged, so he keeps making money off of them.

To his credit, at least he admits this. It’s not like he’s hiding his strategy. He just does whatever will push him to the top of the algorithms and keep viewers engaged.

It’s possible it’s not an excuse. I’m in software eng. Doodles and on the fly flow charts are made all the time. It’s much easier to follow a complex topic if you have something to point to. Especially when trying to tie together concepts, like interplay between services, timing, DB, APIs, etc.

It’s playing the game by the rules as written. If the Game Master is upset at a player for using their own rules against them, that’s the GM’s fault. I can’t begrudge a guy manipulating a mega corporation (in this case, manipulating Google/YouTube’s algorithms) for profit. He needs viewer retention to stay at the top of the algorithm, so that’s what he’s doing.

The viewers aren’t the game masters, though. I honestly wouldn’t want to participate in a game where I have to retain the attention of people without giving them anything of value. I think at some point those who participate also need to take some responsibility.

I think you’re confusing ‘excuse’ for ‘reason’ here. no one is excusing his behavior, just pointing out that the reason he does it is because the system allows for this kind of behavior. we can see through the veil, but others are being hooked by it because it’s designed to keep you hooked.

it’s the same with other charismatic always online personalities. they’re really good at spinning their bs and people keep eating it up because it sounds good.

There’s people who will explain why it is done, and use it as an excuse why it is okay because that’s the rules of the game. Seen it way too many times from apologists. Heck the comment I responded to went about how they give this guy credit and can’t blame the guy for doing it.

That goes from explanation to excuses once they started providing an opinion on the behaviour. So that no one is making excuses isn’t right.

I feel like a tourist on a safari trip with this whole saga. A colleague of mine told me about this situation and now I can’t look away.

When all is said and done, I definitely think it would be a good idea to have game libraries both physical and digital where people can play old games as they stop being profitable to developers.

I have vague memory of there already being such consumer made game libraries for old Gameboy titles back in the 2000s but those sites were taken down. It would be great to have some sort of system in place because this licensing bullshit is exactly why I ended up completely leaving streaming as a whole (for movies and shows) and went back to physical media in january/February of this year. I borrow dvds at the library now. It is fucking fantastic. I had forgotten how much I missed going looking for movies I’d like to see in places like Moby Disc and Blockbuster. It’s so comfy and when you find a movie you’ve never heard of before and you bring it home and it’s really good, it just feels so special.

I think games should have that too. I stopped playing games in 2015 because I just saw no end to having to fork out money all the time to keep up with the tech and getting new titles and gradually seeing how it was more and more an online thing instead of a physical thing so I just stopped. Didn’t like the direction games were taking. Seems like it is reaching a breaking point finally.

Libraries are so important for culture.

I’m not saying you should hate him. And he absolutely have the right to his own opinion. But what he did is the equivalent of reading a news title, and then go trash talk it in the comments about how awful it is, when the article wasn’t about what you were mad about, at all.

      Basically this;

Title: Denmark shuts down 60% of their wind-power

Article: Denmark shuts down 60% of their wind-power, pending an investigation as 1 million birds have died in them over the past 3 months, they are currently assessing the situation and investigating why this change in bird migration route has occurred and how to prevent more deaths. According to local expert, they will use the time to perform maintenance and test various methods of scaring birds away.

PirateSoftware: Denmark are the fucking worst, they shut down tons of wind farms, they are anti renewable, they don’t want wind farms, they realized that they can get cheaper gas, if they import more, and the difference will offset the cost of running and maintaining these wind farms. Where are they getting this gas? Probably Norway, possibly even Russia dude! They can eat my ass, the entire thing. Dried shit in my ass hairs and all.

It’s one possible solution for one of the problems under the same umbrella. If you can’t or don’t want to run the servers for your online game (eg: Echo VR), just open source the server’s code and let the community keep the game running.

      17 minutes.

But in short, PirateSoftware had a fall from grace for narcissism and with his previous opposition to the petition, became a “villain” to unite against.

Misinterpreted the article, made a video about it. Ignored his own comments calling him out on it.

Was overall an asshole “I know more than all of you” through, tone and everything.

      Then doubled down.

I’ve never liked the guy, he’s always seemed so full of himself like he thinks he’s smarter than everyone and can never be wrong.

I watch this dude sometimes, he says he’s a fulltime game dev but all I see him do is play other games. The game he works on has seen very little progress.

Would be nice if he at least admits he’s a streamer and not a game dev.

I’ve also noticed this from watching his stream and the more I learn about the guy the less I like him. He seems to misrepresent and oversell himself quite a bit.

Btw did he tell you about the time he worked at Blizzard, for the millionth time?

He worked at Blizzard in the same way that Apple store employees work for Apple. They do, but not in the capacity that’s been implied.

Are Apple devs even contractually allowed to say that they’re Apple devs? I swear every employee from every other company won’t shut up about it on twitter but you never hear a thing from Apple people. Have I just been missing them completely?

I know a few people who used to work for Apple. The reason a lot don’t say it though is because if you do people automatically assume you had something to do with whatever feature they don’t personally like, and you get berated about it.

Ah, that’s completely understandable. Most people don’t realize that in a lot of companies, even if you are involved, the decision to make the stupid feature/break your workflow comes from a suit 10 pay grades above your level and despite everyone involved trying to explain that it’s a bad idea.

Also it’s a big fucking company haha

Deltarune didn’t exist yet. It’s an undertale ripoff.

Which is very telling, tobyfox released a whole game on his own. While this " I worked at blizzard, BTW" tool hasn’t with an (allegedly) entire company around him. He’s a grifter, he scams people around him to profit off of other’s work. That’s all he does.

Dude had entirely disappeared from my timelines before every youtuber and lemmy poster seemingly felt the need to tell me about how naughty he is.
