“Why would we buy two”
If I was near here, I’d go to this place just because of this
It’s pretty great. It took over the spot of a gay bar in town which had evolved to be more of a general bar while being explicitly LGBTQ+ friendly. They had to shut down for various reasons. I/O took it over and has largely continued being LGBTQ+ friendly, but now with more pinball tables and old arcade games.
where?
Its in the image, r/madisonwi, Madison Wisconsin.
please excuse am retarden
The fact public places need to explicitely say they are LGBT friendly makes our society feel dystopian. It’s as if they had to say they are black people friendly or Jew friendly.
Well, for what it’s worth, I don’t think they make a big deal of it. In fact, the old bar had a sign to effect of “everyone is welcome here, but this is a queer space, and if you can’t handle that, you will be asked to leave”. I think that was taken down, but the spirit is still there.
This is in my hometown!! Absolutely one of my favorite spots. And I cheered out loud when I saw this response a couple days ago. I/O is legendary.
They should paint a door on a brick wall and label it “super male”. And have a sign saying “dorry you aren’t male enough”
Imagine the amount of small businesses that would be put under if they had to pay for vastly more bathrooms because someone can’t be creepy.
Imagine thinking that most businesses don’t just have one gender neutral *toilet
It’s not a bathroom, or a restroom
You’re not taking a bath or having a kip, it’s a fucking toilet you prudes 😂
Sez you! I do plenty of napping on the company shitter.
The fact that stalls exist kinda makes me question why, outside of poorly aged “values” we even have gendered restrooms.
because men’s restrooms are covered in piss
I identify as a man and accidentally went into the women’s bathroom at the supermarket.
It smelled like blood, tampons on the floor, and there was a woman crying in the stall.
I’ll take the piss floors.
AWAITING THE HOUR OF REPRISAL
From what I’ve heard from janitors, the women’s rooms can be outright disturbing. Like period blood murals on the wall.
“period blood mural” is a great punk or trash metal band name

There’s this place i go to where they have 2 single-person bathrooms, but they’re still gendered. Maybe this is the reason
A lot of places with single-person bathrooms that are gendered I usually just see whomever use whichever, whenever.
So are the women’s, men aren’t special.
Haha, I can tell you never cleaned retail bathrooms… *cries*
I cleaned bathrooms at an upscale retail store for five years. The women’s room was consistently worse. You could tell they just didn’t care because they didn’t have to clean it, toilet paper and feminine hygiene products left wherever, piss all over the seats from hovering, and the sinks were just covered in garbage. But when the men’s room was worse, it was way worse. Holy shit is that literal shit everywhere? God why are there fingerprints in it, did you do that barehanded? Why the fuck is it inside the toilet paper dispenser?
I had to clean the women’s bathroom at a Burger King. This will pretty quickly correct any misconceptions you have about differences between the sexes re: bathroom etiquette, we’re all god damn animals.
I don’t know if it’s the reason, or just a side effect, but I’m pretty sure it prevents a bunch of sexual assault, or at least makes some people feel safer.
I feel like that’s the only justification I’ve ever really heard, but I find it to be rather flimsy. It assumes that someone willing to assault someone else would be deterred by a sign. It also assumes that assaults only happen across genders and not within, which is either very narrow-minded or willfully obstinate.
Personally, I would think individual unisex bathrooms that each contain their own sink would be the safest option. You enter fully aware and lock the door behind yourself, only leaving once you are fully aware and alert again. Given that the common area between stalls is essentially public, you could have cameras observing the entrance without invading privacy and capturing anyone attempting to force their way in or tailgate someone entering a stall. Better, safer, gender neutral.
It also assumes that assaults only happen across genders and not within, which is either very narrow-minded or willfully obstinate.
Ya know I’ve actually sat down and talked with my cisfriends on how they feel about the whole thing, way way back when the bathroom scares started… One thing they brought up that I didn’t even think about was “Do these Republicans not know that lesbians exist?”
Do these Republicans not know that lesbians exist?
Of course they do, they were using the exact same talking points against (cis) gay people before that proved to be unviable at the time, and they’ll drag the culture war back to that front if they get what they want with regard to suppressing trans people’s rights to exist as members of society.
Sadly this rhetoric works with transpeople because it’s harder to convince the masses we were “born that way”, when our existence seems to require medical intervention.
As long as Republicans can say we’re weirdos cutting our cocks off to go along with some “New Age Fad”, we won’t be taken as seriously as cis-gays, and it’s hard to argue otherwise because that unfortunately requires nuance that looks too much like “This isn’t what it looks like” to idiots who will not take the time to understand medical science.
It also doesn’t help that because we live in an era of fake news and multiple choice narratives, people are more willing to call bullshit when you tell them that transpeople have existed throughout human history.
I’m worried that there is no winning this time as they’ve successfully created a narrative where to the masses, Trans Rights and Women’s Rights, is a “Pick one you can’t have both”, scenario despite that being as far from the truth as you can get. (Not to mention that Republicans do not value either. Which is the beauty of their little shell-game)
If space efficiency is a priority, I would say just take a normal restroom, add better locks, stall walls that actually go the full height and all of the way to the ground, and have a urinal section around a corner so that it is fully out of view from the (security camera monitored) common area where the sinks are
My former college has gender neutral bathroom in the gym. I have never heard any issues in the many decades that it has been there. Besides, the wall of the toilet stalls are really high and there are no gaps underneath the stalls to dissuade peeping. Just do how my college did with gender neutral bathrooms.
This is the justification.
My only comment to that is: the “women’s washroom” sign isn’t going to stop an attacker.
But imagine how awkward that attacker must feel walking in there
- Trans people who don’t pass will also feel awkward walking in there, and many of them don’t. Often times, you’ll primarily just see people who pass going into the restroom matching their gender. Just the fact they identify as the gender doesn’t often mean even they are comfortable going in there, so it’s not like anyone presenting as masculine going into the women’s restroom is even a common occurrence in places where trans people are accepted
- Anyone who would be willing to visually change themselves to pass as the opposite gender doesn’t need “being trans” as a concept to do so, and could be just as willing to engage in that regardless.
- Gay people exist and they don’t feel awkward walking in to those spaces, yet could just as well engage in sexual assault of people matching their gender without anybody questioning their right to be there.
Right? A No Guns sign isn’t going to stop a shooting, but a Women Only sign will stop all rape forever!
Republican “logic”
Zapp Brannigan says YES.
Mfw “rule” isn’t in the title:
“Finally.”
I went to a board game convention a month ago, it was the first time I’ve girlmoded for something major. They put their own signs over the bathroom signs explaining that both were gender neutral and the only difference was urinals vs stalls. That made it soooo much easier on me and I was very glad
Which happens to be exactly what the place in OP does.
I had assumed, hence my loosely related story
I’m a dude and i want stalls every time. I HATE pissing in a urinal next to a bunch of other people and get piss splashed on everything. So so so many bacteria.
There are well-designed urinals now that don’t splash back. Add to that, If there’s a divider, then the urinal is convenient, quicker and imo cleaner because you don’t have to touch the stall door or lock to close it and you’re not pissing on the seat or sitting down. It’s literally no-contact
In my experience public toilets are so badly maintained that I’d rather avoid touching any porcelain besides that of the sink. That’s one of the main reasons I go for urinals. It’s also often the most direct way to achieve my objectives if my only goal is to urinate, unless there are other people in which case I hover around waiting for one urinal to become less crowded or just use a stall if it doesn’t look disgusting.
I love urinals, carefree pissing
And free cake!
That’s a breath mint, silly goose.
If I can, and it’s clean, I always prefer to sit down to piss. I just want a break, man. Leave me alone for 5.
I think it’s so stupid that this is taboo.
I’ve heard about it being taboo, but I never understood how anyone would even know a guy’s doing this.
You can see feet under the stall door AC the recognize the shoes, or you might be walking into the restroom at the moment they exit the stall. That’s how you would know.
I think it’s dumb too
And how do you know they’re not taking a shit?
Real men shit in the urinals.
Maybe you should do something about that UTI
I want a urinal in a stall
Wish granted. It’s a stall with a urinal but the walls and door are plain clear glass.
As long as I’m not getting splashed then I’ll take it
Indeed, I’m a furry and a few conventions I go to, even in red states, have temporary rebranding of the bathrooms to gender neutral for the duration of the convention as a requirement that the Hotel must maintain in order to keep the convention’s business.
And since furries are either suspiciously wealthy or poor, but dedicated, it’s a wise economic decision for said Hotel.
That is a sensationally good idea.
I don’t think only gender neutral bathrooms is the way to go. There should be an all gender bathroom and a woman’s bathroom. Unfortunately we live in a world where women may still feel understandably uncomfortable with men in the bathroom with them.
Note: To be clear I’m not saying the women’s bathroom should be for cis women only, it should only exclude men.

Anders Holmvik
What a colossal piece of shit
He has a hard an
Nah, this guy? Look at that smile.
The dude from Workaholics?
That’s where the name comes from yeah.
I don’t think it’s actually him. Just someone using his name.
I mean yeah, it’s a character on a shows name.
That’s Anders Holm. From Workaholics.
Yes, who plays “Anders Holmvik”, from Workaholics.
Holmvik is the guy who shot a bunch of kids at a summer camp in Norway… I think. I forget the country.
Edit: Nope. Different person.
No, that’s Breivik.
Here’s a little known fact, gender neutral bathrooms are just bathrooms.
The gender neutral bathroom’s already in your house!
They are also in your neighbor’s house too! Get the pitchforks!
I can see the video where someone with a microphone asks people on the street:
“More and more households in the US are implementing gender neutral bathrooms, what is your opinion on this?”
It drives me crazy to see a single occupancy bathroom in a public space labeled as gender neutral… Just say bathroom… Or even worse they went out of the way to change it from bathroom to gender neutral… Looking at you taco bell…
My son goes to a gender neutral school, my daughter goes to a gender neutral daycare, I work in a gender neutral office, and shop at gender neutral shops.
Uh… Does the username “Anders Holmvik” have anything to do with Anders Breivik, or is that just a normal Scandinavian name?
Anders Holmvik is one of the three main characters in the show Workaholics.
The character is played by actor and co-creator of the show Anders Holm.
Vik or vig, in Scandinavian languages, means inlet or bay and is rather common as part of a placename. Therefore also somewhat common as a family name, since these tend to reflect origin of a given family.
I can recommend the show, it is funny, albeit rather stupid.
They also have a podcast that is pretty dang funny, and I wasn’t even a huge workaholics fan.
Thanks, I’ll check it out!
It’s the name of one of the main characters in the Comedy Central sitcom Workaholics.
“What kind of bathroom does your home have?”
Well, I guess since there are no urinals, it’s for women. Men will just have to find a tree or corner outside.
no urinals
That’s what the bathtub/shower is for!
Is there already a sink pisser community on lemmy?
Sink’s too high for comfort, bathtub’s the way to go!
You just need more pressure to get a proper arc going
Beyond gender, as a father of two girls, i fucking love gender neutral bathrooms. Your establishment has gn bathrooms you’ve doubled the odds of me returning.
