Summary
Days before the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion, Ukrainians find unity threatened not just by Russia but also shifting U.S. support.
Donald Trump’s false labeling of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a “dictator” has provoked fierce backlash, even from Zelenskyy’s critics, who now rally around him.
With ongoing Russian attacks and Ukrainian forces stretched thin, Trump’s suggestion of a swift end to hostilities raises fears of concessions favoring Russia.
Officials argue that elections amid war would undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty. Many vow to continue resisting, regardless of major foreign policy changes.
Zelensky is no dictator. He just happened to be the president at the time that putin invaded and now cannot simply quit and let it all fall apart. Who in their right mind would choose to be a good leader for Ukraine now when the US is turning nazi?
If I’m understanding it correctly he can’t just stop and he can’t run an election. He was the last elected official is well liked by his people and most of the world, he could appoint someone but that seems more dictatorial or monarchist than holding an office I think most everyone would rather not hold at the moment.
There are two very good reasons not to have an election there right now
1: they just don’t have the time for it, they are fighting for their lives and country.
- A sudden strategy shift, even if it’s a good one, has the potential to put their army in disarray.
More important, it’s just more projection. He’s a dictator. Not me
Yup exactly.
Also, elections would create announced gatherings of people, perfect targets for a force that abandoned all humanity
More important, it’s just more projection. He’s a dictator. Not me
Volodymyr’s account exposed!
3. You know Putin would throw every possible resource into influencing that election. He’s damn good at it now too
I also believe there is a law preventing an election during war… I could be wrong, but pretty sure I saw such an article about it.
Since foreign interests wield all the power in Washington anyway, can we get Zelenskyy as president?
He’s a little bit busy at the moment.
Eh, could be worth a shot!
I bet he’d quickly become less busy if he was the supreme commander of the US armed forces
Zelensky is the best person to be in the position he has, all things considered. Seems like a stand-up guy, and not a career politician that you’re gonna worry has other motives in mind.
A true man of the people.
“Slava Ukraini!”
Fuck Trump and MAGA. I am beyond disappointed in my country.
Go move to Ukraine lol
No. You go to Ukraine—and make sure you wear your MAGA hat.
Nah, imma stay in the country whose leader I voted for lol
Nazis fuck off
Go slob on Putin’s knob
Seems like a stand-up guy
I mean, duh, he used to be a comedian!
I’ll see myself out now…
[baa-dum! tsk!]
He was always going to run into trouble with trump’s bizarro views, because one of the greatest assets of Ukraine is being down-to-earth and the truth vs russia’s caleidoscope of bullshit. If they go along with trump’s bullshit, they have nothing left to fight for.
trump did try to extort zelenksy in 2019, by “providing blackamail against biden”
Fuck Trump, fuck Putin. We stand with Ukraine.
I don’t know any country that runs an election in wartime, on top of the thought that Russia could easily manipulate those elections from outside to further destabilize the country.
America had elections in 1944. It has no exception in its Constitution for war.
Besides Pearl Harbour, was American soil ever invaded?
Pretty sure The Netherlands didn’t hold elections in that time. Pretty sure England didn’t hold elections either. Or Poland…
I’d argue there’s a big difference between being at war somewhere and your country being currently invaded and your country fighting survival.
Murica is always at war somewhere.
so those running away to avoid conscription are coming back? /s
you might even find fucked up news like russian and ukrainian ganging up together and doing illegal online scamming, while based in Phuket region.
in reality, it’s no so black and white. and online “reaction” are never representing on the ground situation.
Out of all the conflicts in the world, Ukraine is the simplest, most black and white one there is. It’s one country invading another, and quite openly stating they want the other country to do as they say, or else.
Ukraine didn’t attack Russia. There are no Ukrainian terrorist cells bombing places within Russian borders. There are none of the things in this conflict that wouid make it complicated.
It’s one country invading another.
So ask yourself; do you condone unprovoked invasions?
and online “reaction” are never representing on the ground situation.
Unironically saying this as online reaction such as this, absent of any evidence or being on the ground themselves.
Fleeing from conscription is common across all wars, no matter how just. Russia has massive problems with people fleeing. Anyways, that’s not really what the article was discussing.
It actually is pretty black-and-white in terms of who is fighting a just war, and who is fighting a war more akin to Hitler’s invasion of Poland.
USA is completely solidifying itself as the entire world’s enemy.
the entire world’s enemy.
Except for Russia. They are getting real cozy with Putin.
Yeah, the only people who aren’t united against Trump are Americans.
fuck you.
Yeah, the only people who aren’t united against Trump are Americans.
The 70 million people who voted against him aren’t against him…?
Keyword being “united”.
A 50/50 split on two candidates is literally as divided as it’s possible to be.
There is a similar thing happening with Trudeau in Canada (with lower stakes perhaps). His popularity in 2024 was abysmal, but Trump being elected and coming after him as revived his legacy.
Donnie really thinks that people look at him in awe and wonder.
Other world leaders should really start to ignore the guy and respond to his blabbering with “if I wanted your opinion, I’d ask Putin.”
I mean I do not understand it but there are a lot of people that absolutely do. A shockingly high number.
I’m in Texas (Dallas) and i don’t really see those people. Most of the Republicans i know love George Bush but when you mention Greg Abbott or Trump they just shake their heads. It’s the rural areas.
It is the rural areas.
I’m in rural TN, and the Trump cult is embedded deep here.
I get to look out my bedroom window and see Trump flags every morning.
Rural Pennsylvania here. If the orange Jim Jones started a Kool-Aid line his folks here would fight to be first in line.
I’m in Massachusetts and can report much the same here. Outside the cities, there’s plenty of MAGA maniacs. You could see “Trump 2020” flags still up all throughout Biden’s term in spots.
And these people consistently vote.
That’s the thing that people on the Left need to understand.
Voting matters.
The MAGoos vote in every election.
Until the Left makes voting a priority the MAGoos will always have the advantage.
Yeah, but that might be because Trump panders to the ideologically radical part of their base and promises a vision of the US that is different than how it looks like. I sincerely think he represents hope for change to those people, however fucked up that is.
You guys need a leftist Trump, not the mentally disabled part, but the “actually fights for an ideology and vision” part. Like pack the courts, make Republicans fight in the courts to strike down unconstitutional orders for socialized healthcare, appoint an AG that puts people like Trump in prison, or just well… do something.
Old bit of political wisdom.
“The Dems fall in love and the GOP falls in line.”
Bill Clinton would have wiped the floor with George Bush Jr. but Al Gore, with the exact same policies as Bill was edged out. [let’s not get into the SCOTUS, Bill would have taken plenty of states W. took]
To be honest it feels more like the DNC fails to fall in line with the direction the Dem base falls in love with. Unlike the RNC.
Trump could take over the RNC, people like Bernie couldn’t do so with the DNC.
Look at Obama. When he went up against Hilary in 2008 no one thought he had a chance.
The problem Bernie had was that he personally couldn’t do the level of organizing it would have taken. Sadly, none of his people stepped up and took the reins.
I contributed to Bernie three times, and three times I saw it sputter out.
he has people praying to him.
‘I totally did reverse psychology’
People do. Here’s a comment from someone in a discord I am in, we’ve been arguing about the nazi salutes and donny calling himself king. I brought up the 3rd term stuff that donny has been saying and this is what my “friend” said verbatim : “As much as I’d be down for a 3rd term considering all the garbage thrown at him his first term, I don’t see it as realistic. VP? Have at it. But 3rd term as King, not so much. Tho as far as I’m aware, he’s not said anything about it, just others in the party”
It’s a nice thing, the volunteer outreach you’re doing to try and help the mentally disabled.
I’m not even trying to like win an argument here I just think saying “wow that’s crazy and he shouldn’t be calling himself a king” is too much to ask from some people.
I mean we do, but like one would look at a particularly bloated and grotesque tumour. 🤷♂️
Well, I certainly do look at him in wonder.
Also awe as in he’s awful.
Fun fact, “awful” comes from “awe-ful”, that is, something that fills you with awe. Not necessarily something good or bad, just really big. In older books you see it used in that sense, referring to something like a loud noise, explosion, or a religious experience like the appearance of an angel.
Yup! Similar thing as with “awful / awesome” happened with “terrible / terrific”.
Horrible / horrific is still both bad though.
And “terrific” comes from “terrify.”
I am in awe of his stupidity and that he was even allowed to run in the last election
I am in awe of voter stupidity.
I dunno about that.
I wouldn’t be more willing to die in a losing war just because donald trump said zelensky was bad or something.
Seems like this is just propaganda to convince useful idiots that Ukraine isn’t currently getting routed and cover-up their massive desertion and recruitment problems.
This is the reality of war, everyone. If you were “gung-ho” about Ukraine decimating the incompetent Russians, you may have fallen for propaganda.
Hopefully you can learn from it in the future so you can recognize it when you see it again.
The 3 day special operation is now on the verge of year 3, also a country that has 3 times your population, and was considered the second most powerful army on the planet, was halted? Talk about falling for propaganda.
And yet Russia isn’t exactly winning either. A smaller country is putting a much bigger country, with a supposedly much bigger, better equipped military, into a back-and-forth stale-mate that has lasted well over a year.
Yes, there is a lot of gung-ho propaganda out there. But if it’s truly completely wrong… Why wasn’t Ukraine conquered already well before the first aid from allies arrived?
fuck russia. fuck the american people as they had a vote.
American here. Fuck the people who voted for Trump, didn’t vote at all, and anyone involved in the huge spike of voter suppression. We were sold out through misinformation and inference.
Fuck ukraine
You’re such an edgelord!
Why?
You want to have sexual intercourse with Ukrainians?
Unfair Fairy!
Also fuck Putin and fuck Trump. I’m an American, and I look forward to taking a shit on Trump’s grave.
Ukrainian friends, as an American I’m sorry this has happened, sorry both for my country and for yours. It may be a small consolation as our new regime withdraws aid, but remember that most Americans are still on your side as we have been throughout the war.
Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦 !
,slava ukraini?
That’s a Nazi slogan.
In the age if trump we cannot afford to be associated with a Nazi scum. Fu and fuck Ukraine
I’m worried that this will soon lead to a US invasion into Ukraine, using Russian talking points. The military is already beheaded to avoid any opposition
Invasion? Only uninvited like the ruskies are doing an Invasion.
Besides, peace keepers on Ukrainian non-Russian borders like Belarus would free up Ukrainian units.
How many countries can this guy invade at a time? Greenland, Canada, Panama, South Africa, Ukraine… the list is so long I’m sure I’m missing somebody.
