President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order on Friday designating English as the official language of the United States, according to the White House.

The order will allow government agencies and organizations that receive federal funding to choose whether to continue to offer documents and services in language other than English, according to a fact sheet about the impending order.

Designating English as the national language “promotes unity, establishes efficiency in government operations, and creates a pathway for civic engagement,” according to the White House.

Within hours of Trump’s inauguration last month, the new administration took down the Spanish language version of the official White House website.

Hispanic advocacy groups and others expressed confusion and frustration at the change. The White House said at the time it was committed to bringing the Spanish language version of the website back online. As of Friday, it was still not restored.

Except it does matter. A lot.

No, it won’t stop anyone from using whatever language they choose, but it will cause tons of confusion when they have to interact with the government.

You’d think they’d be upset! But I know too many Latinos who take pride in distancing themselves from other Latinos. There was at least one celebrity who apparently forgot her *monolingual* native accent after a few months abroad because of course she did. 🙄

English? Sounds too foreign to me.

Why not call the official language American?

And even American was from that Italian Amerigo. Why not call the official language Magaian or Trumpish…?

    /s … if needed.

Na, part of being a free country means you should be able to speak whatever language you want and follow whatever religion you wish. Slowly have to squeeze every freedom out of America.

Trump’s greatest accomplishment, surpassing the DuoLingo owl in being the most annoying thing to make me want to learn Spanish. Pendejo.

Glad this dipshit is focusing on the important things.

I was really getting concerned about the Gulf of Mexico being named the Gulf of Mexico. And the 10 trans people that serve in the military. Those things were really weighing on my mind.

Maybe don’t put slavers and murderers in a pedestal to behind with? Actually, never mind, I’m sure your founding fathers would be proud of Trump.

Sure they were products of the time period. You had to own land at least to have any kind of power back in the day. They were not perfect but they did have a vision of a government that could work without traditional kings.

They would be pissed about Trump trying to overrun the other branches. I’n the end, they wouldn’t give a fuck about slaves. As long as their land was worked and they survived. They wouldn’t have cared.

I always thought it was just taken as granted rather than an intentional decision, but I never looked into it. That said, the founders got a whole bunch of shit very wrong, so there’s that.

Oh he has poor English ability. Very poor. The poorest English, I mean, some people say “Trump why are you so poor at English?” and he says “I know, that’s why the made me president.”

This has no practical effect other than virtue signaling to xenophobic racists. It’s called a dog-whistle.
